Favorite work of fiction

I have an audition tommorrow and I am required to present a one minute reading of an excerpt for a favorite work of fiction...I'm having a little bit of trouble choosing something and would appreciate any advice or suggestions!!

Sorry should have mentioned that...it is an original play that is still in development. All I know is that there are 2 female characters (a mother and a daughter)and two male characters. Since the play is still unfinished the characters haven't been fully developed yet, which makes it rather difficult to pick a reading for the audition.

My favorite books are The Great Gatsby and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...but I'm not sure if either of those would neccessarily be good for one minute readings...my roomate suggested a T.S. Eliot poem so I am looking into that...I'm also gonna check out The Man Men of Gotham, thanks so much Westopher

If you want something that functions as demonstration of language, try THE WINTER QUEEN by Joan Vinge or anything from the End of Time trilogy by Mochael Moorcock (I'd recommend END OF ALL SONGS). Any of these are readily available at any used book store.

If you're feeling adventuresome, try something from GREAT EXPECTATIONS or NICHOLAS NICKLEBY. Again, very dense language, but a great performance piece.

I love Great Expectations, good call, thanks...I looked into the whole play on words thing (if that's what you meant)with The Importance of Being Earnest...I just like too many things, few of which I can narrow down to a minute

He can write in three letter words in crayon on the preschool writing tablets that have the pictures of the houses on each line.
