Betty Buckley has the greatest voice to ever grace the Broadway stage. Seeing her in person is always a HUGE thrill, I'm so excited for this!
Yes, I loved Betty in Eight is Enough.
A long, long time ago, I think that Betty originated the role of Grizabella on Broadway in 1982 and was the first to sing "Memory" in the States. But Streisand had the jump on her, having recorded the song in London in 1981. So she had the hit single and Betty remained pretty much unknown.
The final indignity was when Johnny Carson as part of his end of the year Tonight show showed short clips of six different guests singing "Memory." Betty was one of them; lumped in with these other mostly lightweight celebrity vocalists to be laughed at. But it was her song.
The first person to record "Memory" was Elaine Paige, who originated the role of Grizabella in "Cats" in London in 1981...but that was quite by accident. Judi Dench was originally cast, but had to withdraw several days before the show opened due to an injury. After the show opened and became a hit, Andrew Lloyd Weber allowed Barbra to sing the song on her "Memories" album.
As much I love Betty's version of the song, my favorite is Kim Criswell's who opened the 1st National tour of "Cats" in 1985 in Los Angeles. The show played at The Shubert Theatre for not quite 2 years, and she stopped the show every single night.
