I'm entering a talent show at camp this sumemr (far off, I know) and i want to know a song I can use. Last year, I did Gimme Gimme. I have a fairly wide range, from a low E to a high B (below the Glitter and Be Gay "E" to solve some confusion.) I'm short, if that helps. I was thinking of doing "There's a Fine Fine Line," but I'm not sure. My head voice is better than my chest voice, and I want something to show off my voice.
And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going
Someone Like You
Send in the Clowns
Losing My Mind
Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Bill
Maybe This Time

Why not do something like...
Someone Else's Story
Nobody's Side
from CHESS
They are great.
Oh Oh Oh
What about BACK TO BEFORE from RAGTIME
Adelaide's Lament? It's cute :)
Ugh, I'm trying to think of songs that I'm singing, but I think I have a slightly wider range than you, and I don't want to give you something that'll tear you apart.
On My Own, I guess. But it's overdone, if you can sing it well though, it'll be amazing.
Popular? It's not a SHOWSTOPPER, but it's pretty fun.
I can think of a lot more, but I don't know how many would win a talent show.
A lot of classic songs are great, too, but I don't know what kind of audience you're trying to appeal to...
Mozart's Kyrie is wondeefull :)
Thanks! I'm not sure I should do "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" because they did Pal Joey last year. I definietly shouldnt' do "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" because someone did it last year, and they were even betetr than Jennifer Holliday. I'll look at the other songs though! I'm not really sure "Send in the Clowns" would show off my range, but I really love it, so maybe.
And to the other people who responded before I got to post my last message:
I love Chess, and I'll check out the song from Ragtime.
On My Own is definitely too overdone, and I sound like a dying mouse when I sing Popular. One of my friends might do "Adelaide's Lament," so not that.

what about time heals everything from mack and mabel..
also, a great show-off number if you can belt well is fifty percent from ballroom... it's not that high, but it's pretty great.
Here's a few more:
Meadowlark (The Baker's Wife)
I Dreamed a Dream (Les Miserables)
Holding to the Ground (Falsettos)
Not a Day Goes By (Merrily We Roll Along)
The Money Tree (The Act)

if you're belt's not great then don't do the ragtime. check out "finer things" from jane eyre. it's a great soprano showstopper for someone with a strong head voice, not a strong belt.
most of the songs posted earlier were belt show-stoppers.
Better than Jennifer Holliday? I highly doubt that.
Thanks everyone for your sugggestions! These are the top 6 I'll ook at out of these suggestions:
Meadowlark
Finer Things
Send In the Clowns
Maybe This Time
Someone Else's Story
Nobody's Side
Also, Any of Momma Rose's songs from GYPSY-as well as "Let Me Entertain You"-could work really well.

just so you know maybe this time is kind of low and big belt number. send in the clowns is very low...
but definitely meadowlark and finer things should be good for you
"Let Me Entertain You" was done last year. So I'll definitely look at "Meadowlark" and "Finer Things" now and skip "Maybe This Time" and "Send in the Clowns."
Actually, if your belt isn't so great, you might want to cross "Meadowlark" off the list.
Okay...so I guess I'll try out "Finer Things." I'll have to find a recording of it.
The JANE EYRE cast album is definitely worth a listen.
I've heard one song from it that I really loved, but I forgot the name of it. Damn.

i'm trying to think of other strong "head-voice" show stoppers. because in reality, a lot of what we consider show stoppers are made for belters.
perhaps, "it's all the same" or "aldonza" from man of la mancha... those are good "head-voice" songs...
i'll keep thinking.
Thanks! According to my piano teacher, I'm made to be the romantic lead in old fashioned musicals like Oklahoma, or even something like Emma in Jekyll and Hyde. I wish it were different. I want to be able to belt.

well you could look at some rodgers and hammerstein then, or lerner and lowe... a couple others i came up with... "if i were a belle" from guys and dolls.. it's not exactly considered a showstopper like adelaide's lament.. but if you can perfrom it well it's really good.
the other is "a call from the vatican" from nine. you should look at it. i've heard it done belting, and i've heard it done the exact opposite too.. it works both ways as long as you wrap your voice around the song!
but also, finer things is sounding real good for you.. can you do a little bit of coloratura stuff?
NINE has a ton of great female showstoppers:
My Husband Makes Movies
A Call From The Vatican
Unusual Way
Simple
Be On Your Own
Folies Bergere
Nine

yes! i really do heart nine. one my many dreams is to play guido one day surrounded by women singing that amazing score. the best for your voice i would say are simple, unusual way and nine..
I love Nine. I think I'll do "Unusual Way." I'm actually working on that with my voice teacher now!
