Sanda,
Nevertheless he still recieved mostly favorable reviews and many of us have enjoyed his performance inmensely. My issue is with the earlier poster who needed to state fabrications. No need for that. None.

I must say I speak every word I believe and Harvey's lack of vocal ability is a fact that should be mentioned instead of ignoring. It is fair for other audience to make a choice based on the full picture instead of only one opinion.

Sanda,
I totally respect your opinion.. And you are very eloquent. ( and at least you did see the show. Not like that other poster I was refering too)

Posted: 4/18/05 at 8:40pmHarvey's voice is fine for the role - the part was written for a character singer - more likely an actor who can carry a tune - and Harvey is better than that. He may have a gravel-y quality to his voice -but it's rich with warmth and humor, intelligence and kindness - I couldn't care less if Tevye can sing it beautifully or not - he has to be able to act it first and Harvey has proven many times over that he is an exceptional actor - with a voice which is just fine for musicals.

Harvey's voice is too low for the song. It hurts my ear.
I don't want to discuss performance here because everyone hold different idea about it. I just want the people who did not see the show know that his singing is very hard to appreciate. If people still want to watch, go ahead. But I want them to know this instead of going with a high expectation and end up feeling deeply disappointed , just like me.

Posted: 4/18/05 at 8:49pmWHO goes to see Fiddler on the Roof expecting Tevye to have a great voice? I never associated the role with gorgeous vocal tones - granted, Topol sang it quite well - but thats not a reason to expect beautiful singing from anyone playing Tevye - I disagree completely with Sanda - Harvey is fantastic in the role. He is everything the role requires and more.

I expect Harvey can do a great performance both vocally and physically. If he cannot, then he is not wonderful, not perfect, not better than Molina as a lot of people here said. Singing not very beautifully but still can deliver the songs and hurting your ears are two very very different issue.

Posted: 4/18/05 at 8:54pmYou are not most people. Well, in this specisific post, you are. Not everyone must speak out his feelings. And I know there are far much more Harvey fans in this board and Harvey is much for popular than Molina. Anyway, Harvey is the 4 times Tony winner!who cares Molina?

Posted: 4/18/05 at 8:55pmI thought he was wonderful. I was totally swept away by his performance. That scene where he denies the daughter that goes off with the Russian had me devastated. A wonderful performance that I encourage all to see. Sorry you didn't enjoy it sanda. But I will be seeing it again.

Sanda;
We get it. He says red, you say Blue. Different strokes for different folks.
Harvey is sensational in Fiddler. And I am so lucky to have been able to see it and to be going again.

As Ben Brantley warned, it did take me a few minutes to get used to harvey's voice . . . but what a small price to pay for the thrill of witnessing his heartwarming, larget than life and thoroughly powerful performance. I saw it with my cousins who had never seen a Broadway musical and they kept raving about Harvey's acting. The singing isn't beautiful, as many a person has remarked, but his delivery of If I Were A Rich Man, made it feel like it was the first time I ever heard the song.
This brings to mind a recent NYT article about how many Broadway performers (however talented) look and sound alike. Their beautiful voices are undistinguishable (is that a word?). i agree. Carol Channing is another example of someone who was by no means a gifted singer but who more than made up for it with the overall performance and became a legend. Shouldn't Harvey be afforded the same luxury? At least he's very talented AND different than anyone else in the theater. In my book, talent+uniqueness=star quality.

There are also a lot of stars with beautiful voice and a lot of audience appreiciate a beautiful voice. There is also something called LIMITATION. Harvey maybe terrific for Hairspray, but not for Fiddler.
Well, of course, if I am a fan of someone, that is a different issue.

If you insult Harvey you get me pissed.
RUN.
If you really want to see him at his finest you need to check him out at the 50th annual Drama Desk Awards.
Harvey is the greatest host. He had me in stiches last year.

Posted: 4/19/05 at 7:55pmI liked Alfred Molina, he wasn't perfect, a little too cold, but I thought he was pretty good, the best part of the show. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of Fiddler.
