In Peter Filichia's diary entry today on Theatermania he takes a tip from a reader and gives his suggestions on which shows would have won the "Tony for Best Logo" if it existed. He starts in 1947 and goes up to this year's shows. As with all of these types of lists I agree with some and disagree with some. Any thoughts? Discussion?

I really like the logo for Lestat. It's very effective. But IN MY LIFE has a kind of interesting logo. It makes you wonder what the show is about. And then you see the show and still wonder what the show is about.
I think RENT should have at got a best logo win.

I don't think REnt should have one, the logo isn't that revolutionary, it is just widely recognized today.
I'm with him on most of the picks, but I take issue with his assertion that The Lion King's logo is totally unimaginative. What it is is absolutely appropriate to the show, suggestive of both its content and style, while also being bold and recognizable. For the same reasons I'd call Tarzan a shoo-in this year.

I think RENT fits the show perfectly and it's very simple and recognizable. If anyone were to see that "FONT" they'd think of RENT.
I disagree with WICKED...it's wooden and bland. CAROLINE, OR CHANGE should have won that year.
I also disagree with TARZAN...it's just not creative. I would go with...nothing.

I'd have to agree on Wicked - whatever else you might say about it, it's a simple, memorably logo that tells you about the show.
Other votes: The Woman In White, The Scarlet Pimpernel (original version, though the flower/swashbuckler silhouette was fun too), Aida, and the recent Follies revival.
As for Sunday In The Park... I would've agreed, untill I saw how other productions took the same painting and did more unique effects with it.
I disagree on SUNDAY...it's original logo has never been topped, especially by the current strange computer pixel version.

Munkustrap - I am a moron, and stand corrected. I was looking at an image that was literally just the painting.
Another favorite - the London Mary Poppins and The Witches Of Eastwick. I don't think I've ever seen a Dewynters logo I didn't like.
Aw, let The Full Monty get something!

I also love the recent logos of NINE and GYPSY.

I like the concept but not the pixels, it would look better without them.
Ooh, what a fun thread.
2006- Mary Poppins, Grey Gardens (My opinion.)
2007- Young Frankenstein, Mermaid (I personally love Mermaid's)
Really? I think Mermaid's is bland, and Young Frankenstein's is just ugly.
But yes, the GG logo is stunning.
SPELLING BEE's logo just makes me mad because Lead Coneybear is randomly black.
I would say LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA for that year with Clara turned around with the yellow. Stunning brilliance.
I know I'm in the minority, but I really like Mermaid's. Even though YF's is really busy, I like the lighted letters and Ingaon it.
I still don't know how they're expecting Roger Bart to look like Wilder... I think they should've done a new take on his look.
2007 contendors:
Curtains-
Deuce-
Frost/Nixon-
Grease-
Old Aquaintance-
Pygmalion-
The Little Mermaid-
The Ritz-
The Year of Magical Thinking-
XanadU-
Young Frankenstein-
I only did the posters that have been released.

Peter Filichia has one weird working mind.
I think we should have our own awards.
"The OFFICIAL Best Logo of the Year Awards Thread"
People can just name their favorite logo of each year, and someone can tally them up.
I'll start it if no one else wants to.
I think that sounds like a better idea. I'll start it?
