Image Entertainment is releasing the filmed Broadway production of VICTOR/VICTORIA on Blu-Ray July 27th!
One of the world's best-loved performers, Julie Andrews reaches new heights in her most challenging role as a woman pretending to be a man impersonating a woman! Filmed on the Broadway stage, VICTOR/VICTORIA is a warm, funny, wildly energetic look at the nature of love, gender perceptions and the battle of the sexes. Written and directed by Blake Edwards, with an unforgettable score by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse, VICTOR/VICTORIA tells the story of an out-of-work singer whose life changes when she meets the flamboyant Toddy. With his help, she becomes "Victor," an overnight singing sensation in the nightclubs of Paris. But success becomes hilariously complicated when she meets the love of her life, King Marchan, a macho Chicago gangster. From the electrifying excitement of "Le Jazz Hot" to the contemplative "Crazy World," from the humor of "Chicago, Illinois" to the touching "Almost a Love Song," this classic musical has it all.

God, how I loathe that show. I so want to like it, and I've given it so many chances. And it always let's me down. Where the film was charming and subversive, the musical was crass and awkward.
Sad this had to be her return, and her last...

Man, I JUST bought this on DVD. Now I'll have to buy it again on Blu-Ray.
My first introduction to the story was the Broadway show. I later saw the movie. Prefer the stage show.
I like it!! A lot. It's fun. Love the performances.

Oh yeah cause a 10 to 15 years too old for the part Julie Andrews really needs to be in high def.
I've tried to slog through this DVD several times. Is the original film on Blu-Ray? It's much, much, much more bearable.

Posted: 5/16/10 at 2:18amVICTOR/VICTORIA was filmed in High-def, that's why it's getting a Blu-ray release. Most (if not all) of IE's Sondheim titles were filmed in standard definition that would probably not show much difference on Blu-ray.

The only one of Sondheim's full shows that was filmed was "Passion," and I think it was still a 16mm filming. So it's the only one that could be redone in HD, but it wouldn't look all that great. Very grainy and soft, due to the film stock used. And not much better (if at all) than what it looks like on the standard-def DVD.
The others (Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Sunday) were all video taped in standard def. They can never be redone in HD. They could only be up-converted to 1080p, which is what most DVD players can do on their own now (with an HDMI cable).
Any show that was video taped in SD can't be redone in HD. That would be many '70s sitcoms (All in the Family, Golden Girls, Maude). Others that were filmed, could be converted to HD since they were shot on film (MASH, Mary Tyler Moore, Laverne and Shirley). The film negatives could be rescanned in hi-def. I know a few shows have already been mastered in HD like the old Twilight Zone series. I would bet that would come out on BD in the future. And the old Star Trek series has already been released in HD.
But the "deal breaker" is video tape. It's already an electronic format with a limited number of "scan lines," even if it was initially analogue. With film, you can rescan it, just like you can rescan your old photos or slides at a higher resolution.
