Final Shows That Should Have Been Taped

Posted: 3/12/05 at 3:54pmmatt: it was DEFINITELY NOT the only video of wicked shot in its entirety. :) It is most likely however, the only professional video of the whole show.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 3:55pmOh honey, believe me I know that. What I said was that profesionally, I think it was only shot as a whole once in San Fran.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 3:57pmDoesn't the Lincoln Center archives tape everything on or near opening night in NY?

Posted: 3/12/05 at 3:59pmGa: Lincoln Center probably won't release the Wicked recording for the general public to view until after Wicked closes...we have a long way to go! Updated On: 3/12/05 at 03:59 PM

Posted: 3/12/05 at 4:01pmThey tape MOST everything. When they do tape something, it is listed in their index, but not available until the show closes. Strangely enough there is no WICKED video listed so it seems they did not tape it.

YAGMCB!! :-P And yeah there are illegal copies of just about everything floating around. I love the idea of a Broadway Ebay.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 4:10pmLincoln Center taped the performance of A Doll's Life I attended back in 1982. How many of these things ever see the light of day commercially? If they're going to release anything, there are far worthier and intriguing shows than Wicked some of us would like to see.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 4:10pmOkay, now this thread is taking a dangerous turn. There really shouldn't be any bootleg talk on this board. That's dangerous to Rob & Craig and this entire forum.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 4:23pmI think ALL shows should be preserved on video with their premiere casts, and released for sale after the Broadway and first run productions are finished. Much as first-run movies are released on DVD after they finish their runs. The added income could help marginal shows that did not recoup, and provide a good refence for future generations. Much the way cast albums have done. BEWARE "audience" videos. These have dreadful sound and poor video (because show lighting is not ideal for video) and they never capture the excitement of the live performance. I know, it may be the only way you get to see a particular show or performer but it is hardly seeing them at their best. Disclaimer: I don't care about peer-to-peer swappng but I always report to the theatre house manager any time I see somone doing a video (they usually confiscate the tape and sometimes eject the person from the show) and have reported people who sell bootlegs at inflated prices. It's just not fair to the creators/performers.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 3/12/05 at 7:11pmI don't think Theatre would die if some shows are taped. If its the end I say they should tape it and sale it to the public. I would love to see these shows taped but only some of them like THE BOY FROM OZ Hello Dolly 1994 Carousel 1994 I would like to see taped shows that we know aren't going to be revived for awhile.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 7:15pmI heard J/H with Cuccioli was not taped
#42re: Final Shows That Should Have Been Taped
Posted: 3/12/05 at 7:41pmI agree, it wouldn't kill theatres and shows to have one of the performances taped I dont think. I mean it would certainly help those of us who don't live near broadway and can't fly to NY to go see the shows. I'd be thrilled if they started taping shows officially so we wouldn't have to resort to digging up bootlegs.
#43re: Final Shows That Should Have Been Taped
Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:20pmIf shows were taped and sold, people could buy one, copy it and distribute it, so then not only would the theatre ticket sales decrease, so would the video sales because you could just get a copy from a friend. The whole point of going to Broadway is to see a live show. Buying those tickets is what puts a roof over a lot of these peoples heads. But seriously, listen to Matt_G, talking about bootlegs here could be dangerous to Rob and Craig and the entire forum. Use PMs or something, but seriously, not good to do here.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:44pmCabaret (revival) Gypsy (Peters revival) Those are the only two I can think of at the moment that I would love to own. Not bootlegs, of course, but if ever proessionally released.

Posted: 3/12/05 at 10:57pmi think that all shows should be taped. i know that if they are and put for sale then yes, theater would die. but i think everything should be taped and be preserved..just for historical purposes. like so many shows havent been taped so therefore the originals are lost.

So..question about this Lincold Center thing. Can you view the videos in their archives by just going there?
Somebody told me once there was some library or something in new York that had videos of all Broadway shows but I wasn't sure if they were telling the truth or not.
