Well, I saw Doubt tonight, and boy was I ever pleased with what I saw. It is always hard going into a show that got such great reviews and has had so much hype. I was expecting something beyond excellent...a night at the theater that is not only a joy to watch and take in, but an evening that would have me questioning my own beliefs.
First off, I have to say that the ensemble of four actors was amazing! You know the acting is great when a few times during the show, when a character exits the stage in the middle of the scene and the audience was so moved they had to clap. This happened multiple tmes tonight.
Not only was the acting great, but as the play moves on, you find yourself asking yourself, what is right? What is wrong? I found this play to address so many excellent yet touchy issues so well. What I did want to bring up was the topic on a grown man spending time with a younger child. For some reason in out society, it is wrong for this to occur...or perhaps it isn't "wrong" but it is out of the ordinary. When a child and a grown man spend time together, we must question them. This play explores this topic so well.
We must always be questioning our beliefs in order to ensure what we believe is correct (at least for our own sake). Doubt is unafraid in bringing touchy subjects to the table and not only addressing them, but attacking them wth full force. I was very moved by this play and highly recommend this play to anyone. It is a great night away from all of the big, flashy shows that I so popular with Broadway audiences (not that I don't love big and flashy). It is always great when a wonderful new play comes along, such as I Am My Own Wife of last season. Doubt is the first outstanding play of the season. Go see it!

Posted: 3/12/05 at 12:59amI beg to differ -- GEM OF THE OCEAN was the first outstanding play of the Broadway season (lots of great stuff off-Broadway as well) and a far superior play to DOUBT, IMO.

I saw "Doubt" today and I thought it was very good. The only thing I found strange were the accents of the actors. I looked at the Playbill when I left the theater and I saw the setting was "Bronx!" Yikes, I think it was a bit exaggerated.
The last time I saw Cherry Jones, she played Mary McCarthy in "Imaginary Friends." She is fanastic. Every one of the four actors was excellent. Taking place forty years ago, the play shows how the Church dealt with Priest's sexual indiscretions with children.

Posted: 3/13/05 at 7:52pmI saw Doubt a few days ago and LOVED it too! I found it to be one of the best original plays I've seen in quite awhile. And I was glad that the show didn't end ambiguously, that there was a true resolution. I hope to see it again very soon.

Thanks Testing.
Heather Goldenhersh (Sister James) physically reminded me of a young Meg Tilly in Agnes of God.
