I actually loved travolta in it, he came across as very natural and vulnerable
I agree. I saw it with my mom last night, and you could tell she completely related to Travolta as Edna. I have a feeling she wouldn't have realted to Harvey quite as much. Haha.
And I thought Amanda did a lot of subtle, funny things, and had that wide-eyedness of Penny.
I don't mean to thread-jack but since the topic of singing is mentioned I've got a question:
I've heard many rumors about this, but was that purely just Zac Efron's voice in the movie? I know in HSM it was mixed with a 24 year old tenor's but I've heard in Hairspray it was just voice and I've also heard that it was mixed with Matthew Morrisons'.
Thanks!
No. It's all his. I mean, it doesn't sound all that differently than his normal speaking voice.

Amanda Bynes plays the role much more subdued then I expected her to be. I liked it.
I also really liked Travolta a lot in the role.
