During the final chord of tonight's performance of "Jesus Christ Superstar" in Beverly, MA, the lights popped on, a siren rang, and a voice over the PA system asked patrons to leave the building due to a fire that had been discovered.
You'll recall that this happened last year afterhours following the first performance of "Cinderella."
They just can't get a break can they?
It's unfortunate becuase their production of "Superstar" is fabulous. They (mostly) resist the urge to update the piece and a star is born in Nicholas Rodriguez and his performance as Jesus.
All the performers are great though I wish Rona Figueroa had resisted the temptation to add Christina Aguilera-like riffs to the end of "I don't know how to love Him." The orchestra is fantastic and could even be louder and more aggressive. Webber's score sounds great and some tinkering with the arrangements works nicely...beautifully in some parts. If you have the opportunity, give it a look.
There was no fire.
The fire alarm was set off when the particle detectors were tripped during the end of the show due to a heavy haze effect. It was a false alarm and nothing more. The PA voice you hear is an auomatic prerecorded warning. Unfortunatly there is no way to stop it once the alarm is tripped.
