Ok, I know I'm probably going to be lynched for saying this, but I pulled out my copy of "The First Wives Club" the other day and, while watching it, I realized that this movie has the basis for a great musical.
I know there are a plethora of movies becoming musicals, and although I would like to see more original musical books being written, I have to admit that I would love to see a stage adaptation of "The First Wives Club." There is so much there to work with. You've got three strong female leads, three supporting male characters and a VERY funny book to work with. That movie keeps me in stitches every time I watch it and there are so many moments when I am just waiting for them to break into a musical number. In fact, the end of the movie when they sing "You Don't Own Me" would prove to be a spectacular finale to a Broadway musical.
There are so many talented Broadway actresses who could fill these parts and a lot of great music that could be written for a show like this. Speaking of which Marc Shaiman actually wrote some of the music for the movie and I am sure he could write a wonderful stage version of this movie. It has everything a musical needs, especially an extremely comical story with a lot of substance. Many may not agree with my on this matter, but I just feel that this is a prospect worth looking into.
