I'm currently reading a lot of musical librettos, and I am just finishing the David Henry Hwang treatment from 2002, and then read the summary of the 1958 original production online, as I cannot find the script for it. Personally, I enjoy the Hwang version better, but not sure why is wasn't received well. Can anyone ahead light on the productions?
I saw it in L.A. with Lea Salonga and Jose Llana before it went to Broadway and thought it was great. But then again, I love the classics too, and never allow the datedness of a play to distract me all that much. I love the music from the show and find the story quite funny. And Salonga and Llana were super, in my opinion.
