Your best bet is cut thru Shubert alley on to 44 then go down either 7th or 8th to Penn Station. Not sure which street is closer to the entrance to the train but walking down 8th is usually a little less crowded and you miss the congestion of Times Square.

I thought about that too winston, but the trains have been running slow lately, not sure if there is a work slow down because of pending layoffs or if it is work on tracks.
Either way E.Davis, if you do decide to take the subway be sure to have a metrocard before hand for easy entry. Also keep in mind at that time of night the trains do not run as frequently, A, E & C are every 10 to 12 minutes, so figure on a few minutes wait for either or.

As far as I can tell, trains have been running fine. The only thing that might cause delays is that there is construction on some lines at given times. Anyone who rides the subways with frequency in NYC can tell you that there are always delays during times of track work. However, that is due to the trains running around the work itself not because of any layoff issues.
Other then that, at least for me, I have not noticed any change in pattern for the run of the NYC subways.
