Through TDF, I can get tickets to Forbidden Broadway for my trip to NYC. I know it would be a funny show and all, but should I see it or try to get into a "real" show like Spelling Bee or DRS?

Wow, all these years... and Forbidden Broadway is merely an illusion.

Forbidden Broadway is great if you know a ton about what's currently/recently going on on Broadway (if you visit this site at all you will be fine re: Forbidden Broadway or a 'real' show) It just depends on what you want to see. I have seen all three, and recommend Spelling Bee, but all of them are good. Forbidden Broadway is very specialized.

If you haven't seen DRS, go see it. Norbert Leo Butz is AWESOME. It's just as funny (if not more so) than Avenue Q.
Have fun!

Forbidden Broadway is fun and silly, but it's not as much of a production as the others.

Of the three, I think DRS is the best one. Hysterical, great music, lots of fun.

BTW, FB IS a "real show"

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

It's not a Broadway show, but it is a show. If you want to see a more expensive production, then go see a Broadway show.

It depends on what you want to see. If your looking for more of a big production go and see DRS or Spelling Bee. FB is more of a fun, sily show that you want to see for a fun night out. It's hysterical and clever, but it has more of a comedy act feel. The stage is very small and you are literally right near them, so it doesn't matter what row you are in. It's so much fun!

I would highly recommend DRS. Not only is the show itself hilarious, but the performances are outstanding. Right down the line, this has to be one of the strongest casts to come along in years. Jonathan Pryce, a legend and an absolute joy to watch, is a "must see" in the role of Lawrence Jameson. I didn't get to see Norbert Leo Butz when I attended, but his understudy was terrific - a great comic and wonderful singer. Rachel York is dazzling as Christine Colgate, and her chemistry with Jonathan Pryce is magical. Greg Jbara is perfectly droll as Andre, and Mylinda Hull is a powerhouse as Jolene. Joanna Gleason was also out when I saw the show, but I am eagerly anticipating a return trip in June to see her and NLB. I plan to attend an evening performance, however. I think the matinees are iffy for catching these two.

Because of the earlier mixed reviews, I wasn't expecting to be as wildly entertained as I was by DRS. But it was so, so funny, and even touching at times. I liked and cared about all of these characters, and the music was a fine mix of outlandish lampoon and tender love songs. This new cast is terrific, and the current reviews bear that out. By all means, go see it. "Forbidden Broadway" will be around for years to come, so catch that when you have time to see more than one show during your trip.

Forbidden Broadway's a great show! A real theatrical experience in every sense of the word. It does require some insider information, but like mentioned before, if you read any of these boards or articles on this site you'll be all good.

Anyone going to be in town this weekend? I'll be on Spring Break and I'd love to grab a coffee with ya!

I totally agree with lovesclassics... see "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." It's the best show on Broadway, no question.

I personally preferred DRS and Spelling Bee to Forbidden Broadway.

Forbidden Broadway is great, and I could tell it was very funny, but as I hadn't seen about half the shows they were sending up, a lot of the jokes flew completely over my head. I loved the bits I did get though. So I suppose my point is, you have to know a lot about current Broadway shows to fully appreciated Forbidden Broadway.

DRS and Spelling Bee are both incredibly funny as well. At one point in DRS I laughed until I cried, which for me almost never happens.

Forbidden Broadway has sort of a Saturday Night Live feel to it. It's a series of musical vignettes (very cleverly done) that parody all the current musicals (and a few not so current musicals!). It is indeed worth seeing, but it's more fun and light, without a lot of sets, etc.

Spelling Bee is well worth seeing. It's very funny - and the format of the show is brilliant. I personally found the music a bit forgettable, but it was well worth it for the acting (which is superb) and the comedy.

Which brings us to DRS. This show, to me, has it all. Wonderful music, dancing, acting, great characters. It is so laugh out loud funny, that we were literally crying when we saw it, we laughed so hard. I have seen all three, and DRS is by far my favorite.

I recently watched the old DRS movie - and while it is great funny (Steve Martin and Michael Caine are priceless!) the musical actually improves the story and makes it even funnier and that much better.

My vote goes to DRS!
