How come they don't mic plays?
Because Jessica Lange needs one.

If you really want to help the American theater, don't be an actress, dahling. Be an audience..... Don't be taken in by the guff that critics are killing the theater. Commonly they sin on the side of enthusiasm. Too often they give their blessing to trash... Tallulah Bankhead

The one I remember being most bugged by was Cheno's at the Tonys.

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

not to be mean, but cheno's seem worse than most be it may just be because her forehead is rather large (high hairline) so instead of it being an inch or two down its more like 4

Modern Broadway Houses remind me of an episode of The Simpsons where the audience is sitting in a movie theater and that god-awful THX Sound thing came blaring on and all of the characters hair flew back. I was laughing so hard after that!

"melissaerrico-u clearly arent a performer because no matter how much you project you NEED a body mic. it wouldnt even be safe for the actors voice if they forced their sound to be louder...they do have 8 shows a week, ya know?"

Body mics have only been around since the 1970s. There was musical theatre before the 1970s. They didn't use body mics. Most plays on Broadway don't use body mics. Ethel Merman would turn over in her grave if she knew somebody said that projecting isn't enough.

It is nearly impossible to sing over electric guitars, drums, and other amplified instruments.

also some theaters are accustically terrible, its the reason my high school had to get a mic system, the 10 feet in front of the stage (wherein they put the orchestra) is where they angled the panels to, ergo from there you can whisper and be heard in the lobby, but on stage you can't hear yourself think
