Fox Theater (ATL) - Help!

I'm in Atlanta this week, and just saw that Cabaret is playing right now at the Fox. Seem to be a ton of seats available for tonight, but does anyone know if these get reduced prior to curtain? Also - the theater seems HUGE (never been), are there areas to avoid?

I haven't seen Cabaret since the first revival (with Raul and then Stamos), so I'd love to see this again. But not sure I feel like spending $100...or sitting in the nose bleeds.

I've been a subscriber at the Fox for 10 years and have sat all over that theater. I'll be at Cabaret on Sunday. Yes, it's a HUGE space. It holds 5,000. That being said, there really isn't a bad seat in the house. I've sat on the dead last row in the gallery before and still had a pleasant experience. Just as long as you go in with the understanding that this is much larger than a typical Broadway theater you'll have a great time. Occasionally they will do a lottery for bigger shows, but I'm not aware of any deals for Cabaret.

I feel like bigger theatres should have screen on the sides to show the show people from the back. Doesn't starlight do that?

I'm here in Atlanta myself for the next few months. And yes, the Fox is a barn, bigger even than the vast Pantages in Hollywood, CA where I'm from. And yes, the Moroccan movie-palace architecture that surrounds you is glorious and well worth the price of admission. Each time I've gone, it was a no-brainer to spring for the pricier tickets (which are still much cheaper than Broadway) to sit as close as possible. Even the orchestra pit is vast, so row A is a good 15 -18 feet or more from the stage.

Two tips: save up for the good seats, and/or bring binoculars. (No joke-- I do that for Broadway shows all the time.)

Was just at the Fox tonight to catch the tour of CABARET starring Randy Harrison. Really amazing to see such a polished production on a city-per-week tour! Every beat of choreography was meticulous, every lighting cue was flawless, and every note from the orchestra was spot on. Great performances and gorgeous voices top to bottom. Standouts by far were Randy Harrison's emcee (same vocal inflections as Alan Cumming but even creepier coming from such an angelic looking kid), and Mary Gordon Murray's Frau Schneider-- I've never heard the notes in What Would You Do? sung so clearly. Only quibble in a stellar cast: Andrea Goss's Sally Bowles was an especially brittle, charmless interpretation, though she really made something striking and exhilarating out of the title song; that moment when she is visibly freaked out by the orchestra rejoining the song after the bridge was shocking and goosebumply-- loved it.

So how did I deal with the barn-like scale of the theater for this intimate show? I sprang for row CCC which is the 2nd row sitting on the orchestra pit. I was about 7' from the stage-- way closer than back when I first saw the show at Studio 54 in '98. Cost for the ticket today? $98 plus about $20 in fees. Best deal in years for such a great performance!

This is not true. I'm from atlanta and have seen many shows at the fox. Because the house is absurdly large, a great number of the seats are god awful, and I wouldn't spend a penny on them. It can definitely be challenging to find a ticket that is both in a good location and not too expensive.

Honey, I'm not sure I believe you've been to the Fox hundreds of times. Perhaps you are confusing it with another Fox Theatre? Or maybe you've sat in the same section every time? Because for Broadway tours (I can't speak for concerts for movies), there are many seats on the sides of the orchestra section where you are literally only able to see a quarter of the stage at best. I was given one of these seats for the Wicked lottery several years ago and it was an awful view. Also, if you sit in the way back of the orchestra or the balcony, you may be able to see the full stage, but you feel so far away. It's like watching the show from another planet. The acoustics in the fox are not good, so if you get a seat that is too far from the stage or off to the side (like many seats in that theatre) it sounds crappy.

I guess we have just had different experiences. I've been a season subscriber for 15 years, and have also seen countless concerts there. When I was younger we sat up in the gallery and loved it, and as I've grown (along with bank account) we have gradually upgraded our seats year by year. We've never been unhappy with a seat we've had there. You are correct about the far side seats, I just wasn't considering those because unless it's a "Wicked" or "Book of Morman" situation they don't typically sell those seats at all.
