When you're casting for musical theatre, it goes WAY beyond how well you sing.

Her version of the National Anthem is moot.

Carol Channing was "legendary" as Dolly Levi. She couldn't sing it "well" or impress Simon Cowell, Simon Callow or Simon McCorkindale to save her life. She was a perfect fit for the part, however.

There's a lot more to consider here.

I wouldn't mind Fantasia but I really feel that Jennifer Hudson would be a better Effie. The girl has a voice and has a lot of theatre background. And a professionally trained singer in both opera and pop/musical theatre. But either works for me. Whatever. :-P I just want them to announce it!

I'm happy for Fantasia, but I still wish the gospel singer "Lashaun Pace" would have been considered. I suppose she's in her early 40's and would be considered too old for the part though. I can't think of nobody better.

I like Jennifer Hudson too, but there is a reason why Fantasia beat her on AI.

Jennifer can sing Fantasia OUT OF THE WATER. No comparison.

Some for Latoya - who is a true vocalist.

Jennifer and Latoya have better stronger voices imo than Fantasia but they have no "charisma". Fantasia could have an audience on their feet and screaming in a concert, whereas I think Jennifer and Latoya would have them clapping politely.. or sleeping.

I love me...some Fantasia but no Effie for her. She is just not the right person for the role. They should really cast a "no body" or even Billie Holiday herself.

I'm not feeling Fantasia as "Effie". I don't care what Jamie Foxx says. I hope the producers do not cave in and cast her because if they do I will not see this movie.

O my word, I remember Fantasia rendition of the National Anthem,
it was terrible!!!....
There's nothing as powerful and inspiring as the National Anthem sung well, I might add,.... by a performer who lets the Anthem itself be the focus.

Then there was Fantasia One-Name's version, at the MLB All-Star game last night.

Over the top, dripping with her typical "look at me, I'm a diva" hubris.

Her version belongs down with ......Roseanne Barr's version, in baseball's Hall of Horrible Done Anthems.

Beyonce was named by Ebony in there...60th year anniversary issue as one of the Greatest African American sex symbol of 2000's. ....Beyonce is not only sexy she is a great singer....which is uncommon in America...to have a beautiful, sexy, and meek entertainer ...who can actual sing is like a shock to most folks.

It would be so easy to...dismiss her if she was just pretty and no talent...

Ellen, according to the rumors, Condon is the one that wants Fantasia, so he wouldn't be the one caving in.

I'm iffy regarding Fantasia's version of the Star Spangled Banner, but she actually sang it live, which you rarely get to see these days.

Fantasia didn't do the National Anthem justice...she should have pre-recorded.

Condon wants her...wow I didn't know that....will he still cast her after she disclosed to the world...she can't read well?
