Free Tickets

Wicked the Musical comes to the Orpheum Theater this week and it actually opens in approximately 4 hours tonight and what a way to start this by introducing you to 2 ways to get free tickets to see the show and 2 discounted was to pay for it.

Every opening night, lots of comp tickets are given away and if you happen to be in the media or have connections to people working in the theater, you can get to see the show for free.

There is another way of getting in for free and that is waiting outside the theater the last minute and wait for people with extra comp tickets to give it away to anybody willing to get in so as not to waste their comped or paid tickets.

I have done this probably 3X in my life and the first one was the return engagement of Mamma Mia! at the Orpehum and a friend and I got in for free when a gentleman handed them out the last minute. We got a mezzanine seating and it was an overall good experience considering I got in for $0.

The second event that me and my "partner in theater crime" attended was the opening engagement of The Color Purple at the Orpheum (again) and this time a lady and her boyfriend handed out 2 rear orchestra tickets.

We were very happy and hysterical to be able to get in the theatrical event of San Francisco for free!!!!

It is not all easy all the time because on some ocassions, we have tried the same technique but fell short of getting in and felt very lousy for standing outside waiting for nothing.

Another route but that takes more effort is joining online contests, raffle draws and promotions.

I saw the revival of A Chorus Line for the second time around by winning an online contest from a popularity contest sponsored by SHNSF the presenter of Best of Broadway in San Francisco and I got to bring my friend and we got other prizes like gift certificates to an elegant restaurant in theater district.

Another lucky opportunity for me was winning a raffle draw by Borders Bookstore from the Union Square branch and they gave me 2 tickets to the Drowsy Chaperone.

For the discounted portion of getting tickets, SHNSF also offers rush tickets and lottery.

For the long engagement of Jersey Boys, I got in doing "rush" and we usually wait in line 2-3 hours before the box office opens and they sell limited discounted tickets for $25 normally selling for $70-90.

Rent, Avenue Q and Spring Awakening offered discounted "rush" tickets, also.

For the lottery option, Wicked will be doing this lottery at the lobby of the Orpheum 30 minutes before the start of the show and for every name picked, 2 tickets can be sold for $25 in cash form only....with a valid I.D.

So those are my tips and happy theatergoing to everyone who wanted to try getting free comp tickets and discounted tickets through contests, promotions, rush or lottery.

If all else fail....get a full price ticket if you cannot miss the theater event of your life.

I have paid full prices on several ocassions and have also given some extra tickets on some instances.

More information available at shnsf.com for the Best of Broadway in San Francisco.

re: Free Tickets

BTW-- the WICKED lottery now costs $26.50 and they draw names about 2 hours before the start of the show. Meaning--6pm lottery drawing for the 8pm show.
