Me? I'd hate it because to me I may as well be sitting outside the theater if I'm going to be in the Mezz but I'm one of those picky people andyf mentioned. Most people would be fine with that.
I sat in the front mezz for wicked and i was fine. The only problem i had was that you sometimes feel far away from the action since the gershwin is such a huge theatre. So bring your binoculars.

i sat 5th row in the mezzanine my first time and still loved it
since i've sat in the orchestra and real close and way back - all are great seats
i've found i actually prefer the orchestra cause you feel like your part of the show but the mezzanine is great for seeing the big picture and all of what's going on on the stage - best for the 1st time visit

That theatre is horrible. I've sat second row mezzanine, and it's like sitting last row mezz of a smaller theatre. You can see all the effects, but you can't even make out the faces enough to get the effect of the performances. But if 8th row mezz is all you can get...go for it.
Please don't get me started on that Tiff. You would THINK with all the money thrown into that show they could do something better than that absolutely AWFUL excuse for an effect.
the theater here in buffalo is really big... and i've sat in many different spots. sometimes the view sucked, sometimes it was great. when i got to ny and saw wicked, i expected the gershwin to be so much bigger from what i read on this board. i was happy with my seat and i was row E of the front mezzanine. i felt so spoiled when i was in the nyc theaters!
Well it's true. I was very disappointed at that and when I came home I had two comments about it, 1. Act I feels too long and 2. The Act I finale needs to rework that whole platform thing. Otherwise I enjoyed the show. I'm not going to say I hated it because I didn't but I saw a lot that could be changed.
People actually say that Wicked has good special effects?! Okay, I admit the show isn't Satan incarnated (Cheno is, though), but really...Phantom of the Opera - THOSE are more impressive special effects!

Yeah, when I pay my hunnerd buckz I 'spect top notch special EF-X just like a George Lucas CGI laden cartoon--I mean, "movie". You see, I'm an idiot and I can't appreciate the Defying Gravity moment that is laden with symbolism in a show like WICKED cuz I really don't have much in the way of frontal lobe developement. I need explosions and laser lights and flying, lots of flying to keep my nano-second attention span on the stage.
I mean, the book and score is simple enough for an 8 year old girl to understand but I just don't get it so I laugh at the part where the main character has a pivotal life change because I don't expect that moment to be about the green lady taking charge of her life, growing cathartically (and painfully, fearfully, yet going thru with her seminal bid for independence; something that resonates with a heck of alot of people)at the end of a pretty good first act. No, I don't get that and I feel frustration that everyone around me gets it while I don't. That makes me angry and humiliated like back in grade school when someone told a joke that everyone got but me.
Look, I just want some really cool EF-X while the green lady on stage sings that really cool song. Why can't they, like, ya know, like, have the green lady fly around on a bungee cord on her broom because then I wouldn't have to think so much about what that scene/song means? Are you listening WICKED producers??? It would be so much cooler if the green lady, like, flew around the stage and a buncha other stuff happened like more people flying and maybe a disco ball--ya know, one of those shiny ones, like, dropped down and spun around and cool stuff like that instead of just that platform and black sheet thing that happens. See, that's why I laugh at the end of that song, because I can't appreciate someone's singing talent alone, no, I need more.
I laugh at things in life I don't understand. I laugh alot...

Not anymore, at least not on Broadway. Have you seen it lately? The poor show needs a good kick in the butt, even the special effects seem to be tired.
in phantom that mirror trick gets me everytime. i think thats the best the theater has to offer. well that and the lion king. i know its puppets not effects but phantom and lion king take my breath away
bythesword - I saw POTO in April and thought it was pretty sloppy, but I was also sitting really close to the stage so I thought it was just my proximity to all the mechanisms that made it so obvious. Plus, the show on the whole seemed tired, including the performances, etc. Either way, tired or in its hey day, its special effects still beat Wicked. This is how Wicked is at its peak!
