I read a thread on this a while ago, but I couldn't find it in a search, so anyway...
What shows do you think will be/want to be filmed? I would like to see Next to Normal filmed. What about the rest of you?

I was just thinking about this this afternoon.
I haven't heard anything else on the subject so I hope it's still happening. As for NEXT TO NORMAL, sorry but that would just be a waste. I can't even imagine how 3D would be used in this show. I'm actually cracking up at the thought of it.

Posted: 7/30/09 at 11:13pmI know that Next to Normal is unlikely, but I simply can't wait for the tour to come to Chicago. I thought Next to Normal might look good in 3-D because of how the three-level set shows the action. Of course, I haven't been able to see the show yet, so it could look terrible, ugly and boring in 3-D

"9 to 5" would be perfect for this kind of idea!
Didn't they say they were in talks with 10 musicals currently on Broadway and would announce their first project back then?

Actually, back in May, they had a press release saying they would release 5 musicals in 3-D over the next 18 months and they would announce the first title "within the next month". That obviously didn't happen. The website (www.fugobi.com) still says "Fugobi Broadway 3-D: coming soon".
I don't think there is enough time to work out deals and film 9 to 5 before it closes. I think a lot of producers aren't going to want their shows filmed. If Shrek starts to suffer in September, it could be filmed for one of the final performances. Does anybody think plays could be filmed? I know that the only currently running plays are God of Carnage, Mary Stuart, and The 39 Steps, but maybe plays that could work in 3-D will open. Burn the Floor could get filmed before it closes its limited engagement.

Posted: 7/31/09 at 2:47pmI would also like to see Wicked in 3-D, but with the expensive ticket prices for the show, I doubt producers would allow people to see the show for a $10 dollar movie ticket. Wicked is a family show and most families would rather spend $40 to see a Broadway 3-D movie than $400 to see it live. Then again, Disney concerts have been filmed in 3-D and still sold out, so you never know, except I think more eight-year-olds would rather see Hannah Montana live than Wicked. Maybe The Little Mermaid before it closes? I know it is also closing soon, but Disney will probably try to do whatever it can to get back their investment and six- and seven-year-olds who are obsessed with the movie will probably want to see it live on tour, also.

Posted: 7/31/09 at 6:44pmI agree, The Little Mermaid is also a great idea for this kind of filming (still think 9 to 5 should do it).

Posted: 7/31/09 at 7:01pmI think the big thing about the filming is that it is in 3-D. I haven't seen 9 to 5, but I don't think there is much that would benefit from 3-D apart from the scene I have heard of with Mark Kudisch's character in a harness. It may just be that I'm bashing 9 to 5 because there are other shows I would like filmed.

Ok, apparently you all don't understand the concept of filming in 3D.
It is being done for depth. Not for cheap 3D tricks. ANYTHING would benefit from 3D. "Up" was a good example. Nothing in that movie screamed 3D, it was done in 3D (as will all future Pixar films) because it gives the illusion of depth. Jim Cameron's upcoming live action "Avatar" was developed under the same concept.
It does NOT matter what musical it is. They're going to go with the ones the producers agree to, and the ones they think they can market to a mass audience. That said, PLEASE let them do this with Next to Normal.

Posted: 7/31/09 at 9:12pmI know, it really comes down to which producers want their shows filmed. The only time I've heard of shows filmed, not being a final performance, were with Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd

Well then, AwesomeDanny, you haven't heard of over a dozen titles that were filmed and are on DVD:
KISS ME KATE
COMPANY
INTO THE WOODS
SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE
PETER PAN
PUTTING IT TOGETHER
SWEENEY TODD
RENT
CATS
VICTOR/VICTORIA
CINDERELLA
PASSION
JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT
FOSSE
SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE
and this doesn't even include studio-filmed productions, such as JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR or DOZENS of plays such as THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER!

Well, although I know there are many broadway shows I haven't heard of being filmed, but my post mentioned Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd, and I know that Company and Rent were filmed very close to or on closing night. The closest thing to a Joseph filming I have heard of was the movie, which I don't think counts as a filming of a Broadway show. Some of the shows you listed, like Cats, were filmed in London and not Broadway. Of course, I am relatively new to the theatrical world and I have not heard of the filming of many of those shows and I will probably try to find a copy of the DVD's for most of those shows. I believe a lot of those shows, including Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods, were not filmed very recently. Although there are many shows that have been filmed, you can't deny that a vast majority of shows are only filmed for the New York Library, where you need an approved reason to view a show. You probably don't believe me but as I was typing it I was wondering if Cats and Sunday... were filmed for final performances, but I guess not.
Changing the subject, I still think that for a show to be filmed in 3-D, the show would have a benefit from the 3-D. I'm sure it's more expensive to film in 3-D and if not much was gained from it, the producers would probably like it to be cheaper. Of course, the deal depends on 3-D, so I think that Fugobi will probably try to find shows that would look a lot better in 3-D than 2-D.

Correct.
INTO THE WOODS is actually a filmed version of the first national tour. PETER PAN was filmed at the La Mirada Performing Arts Center. CATS was filmed both in London and also in a studio. Also, LEGALLY BLONDE was filmed for MTV television and was never released to DVD. PASSING STRANGE was filmed "movie-style" whatever that means. Special engagements, such as WHOOPI: BLACK TO BROADWAY, ROBIN WILLIAMS LIVE ON BROADWAY, and now A FINAL NIGHT WITH GEORGE W. BUSH were released DVD after their cable broadcasts. All of this is just FYI.
And regarding the recordings for the Library...they try to film all Broadway shows but if a show doesn't last long enough, they miss out on it.

I didn't know Will Ferrell's show was released on DVD! I saw the HBO broadcast and now I have to find the DVD. I also have to take a look at Robin Williams live on Broadway. Anyway, I wanted to redirect the thread back to what it was originally about. Has anybody heard rumors of what shows will be filmed?
EDIT: on the official next to normal twitter (twitter.com/n2nbroadway) they posted the message "Over the last 12 wks N2N has had the web all a-Twitter! Stay tuned next week when we announce an exciting + groundbreaking new project." Could this mean it will be the first show filmed in 3-D?

Shrek and Rock of Ages seem like perfect candidates for this.

Posted: 8/1/09 at 1:02pmI agree the Rock of Ages would be great in 3-D. I think that could inspire a lot of rock fans to see the show on tour. Of course, a tour hasn't been announced yet and probably won't happen extremely soon, but the filming probably won't. I decided to ignore the Next to Normal tweet about a new project because I found out there is a twitter that just started called "N2NINTERMISSION". Now, tweeting thoughts during intermission definitely sounds exciting and groundbreaking because nobody has done it before.

BUMP!
Okay, an announcement for the shows is long overdue. I think that they're having trouble getting producers to agree for their shows to be filmed. By now, I think we can rule out the announced shows closing in September (Mermaid, 9-5, Ave. Q)
If they could work out the deals quickly enough, how about "Burn the Floor"? I think the 3-D might make the dancing look even cooler.
You know, this was reminding me of Rent's filming with Sony's The Hot Ticket. I just revisited their website and still, the only two shows they filmed were Rent and Cirque du Solei (is that spelled right?). Do you think Fugobi will be able to follow through with this project?
