newyorkuniq: I'm w/ you. This is a freaky, scary thread. People who contrive to get someplace they have no business being are exactly the kind who should be kept out.

"I don't know how everyone else feels..I may be in the minority here...but I believe backstage is really only for family and friends of the performers or others involved with the production."

You are definitely not in the minority. Some people really scare me with their attempts to go backstage. Personally, if I didn't know somebody involved with the production, I would feel really awkward being there. What bothers me even more than people trying to get backstage without a legitimate source are the people who want to know where every exit and entrance is so they can hunt down the stars. There are alternate exits for a reason. Some people don't like (or perhaps just don't have the time) to stop and talk to fans all of the time.
Corfriends, that was not in reference to you. I'm just saying that I've seen other people on this board post about wanting to know what other exits stars (like Sutton Foster) leave from so they can find her. It's a little stalkerish.
It's definitely nice if you want to send a note and/or flowers backstage. You are clearly doing it out of nice feelings to let someone know you enjoyed their performance, and not expecting to get backstage because of it. :) I'm sure they will appreciate the gesture.

Are you people who like to go backstage the same people who go into someone's house, say you have to use the bathroom and check out what's inside their medicine cabinet??????
What do you think this is? GRAND CENTRAL STATION!!!!!!!!!!

Just a bunch of naked actors running around frantically. Oh, you mean after the show is over?

IDINA even said in an interview after shows, she tries not to use her voice and basically takes a shower and gets the hell home... you were also the one who waited outside the WICKED stagedoor for 2 hours prior to showtime trying to get a photo with idina..how rude is that? It's called respect for the performers. Write her a letter with postage so maybe she can send you a headshot...but, if I were you just wait with the rest of them by the BARRICADES for her to come out.

Backstage is nothing special. I've been backstage at Urinetown. It's a bunch of actors hanging out on their down time.

After the show craziness...

1.) For security reasons, your name usually needs to be on a list unless the stagedoor person knows you personally. It can get kinda crazy letting people in as people exit out.

2)It's like a rat's maze in an old factory back there! All the glamour is left onstage!

3) since there's only a few "star" dressing rooms (cubie holes to be exact) you will most likely not get anywhere near them, unless you are an invited guest. They're small and cluttered. The Minskoff and Majestic are not too tight but most others are.
The nicest actors really don't want to stay there any longer than they have to. A few invite family or close friends that come to see them, and they sometimes make plans right after the show.

4) the ensamble dressing rooms are pretty much off limits as there's so many actors trying to dress and leave at the same time.

Sometimes groups pre-arrange a "meet and greet" that takes place in the theater with a cast member or two. They end up scurring down the rat maze and come out the stagedoor. They don't ever see the dressing rooms. I wouldn't try to sneak in with a tour group. They're arranged by the stage maganer weeks in advance.

I'm sure actors appreciate loyal supporters and graciously spend time with them after a performance. It just gets scary and crazy having people from all over the country asking to go backstage. Especially in the times we're living in.

If you really want to say something special, write a nice letter ahead of time,or wait for them outside. If they want to invite you in they will. Be gracious and patient. They've already given their best to the audience on stage.

ok, this thread is turning into something i did not want it to be. i simply, really enjoy wicked, it is probably my favorite show. and idina and kristin are up there with my favorite actresses. while many of you are making it seem like i want to stalk the stars and invade their privacy, i simply would liove to shake their hand, that's all. that is why i am sending flowers backstage and not sneaking through the stage door with dark glasses on. and also, i hardly think that me waiting before a show to meet a star is that inconvenient to them. the only time i have done this was before wicked and i met joel grey, i must have taken up a whole 25 seconds if that of his time. if the stars were that busy and didn't want to say hello, they would say thank you, but i'm really busy.
and also note that all these people who say that backstage is nothing special have already been backstage. i'm curious. forgive me for being curious about a place i haven't been with people i admire.

I'm sure you'll forgive everyone for assuming you wanted to weasle your way backstage into the performers' private space & time when you reread your posts -- you are "determined" & plan to use flowers as a bribe, etc. Doesn't sound terribly innocent to me. You may not want to injure, but you surely don't sound as if you're planning anything completely pure, either. I think a lot of us are guilty (most, probably) of not asking ourselves what people's REASONABLE reactions might be to something we've posted...or done or plan to do or do....

i agree, the reason i am 'determined' to get backstage is as i stated before in hopes to shake hands with one of my idols. not to stalk or invade them. and i think you might be incorrect about me saying i want to bribe them, i just figured that if i were to be invited backstage, flowers might do that. that's not the reason i'm doing it though, i'm doing it to show appreciation for her work. please understand that my intents are only to let her know that i admire and appreciate her work.

if idina took every fan backstage who gave her flowers, she'd may as well live there.

sorry, corfriends, I hope I didn't offend you. If you want to show your appreciation with flowers, why not take them to the front of the stage at the curtain call and hand them to her, with a small note like " thank you for a great performance. I would love to say hello at the stage door after the show". Then show up. It goes from there to God's ears! Good luck!
