Posted: 12/22/03 at 8:34pmI agree that backstage is for friends and Family or people who actually work there! Being an actress and being tired after a show the only people that I want to see in my dressing room are my friends and my family! Because it is a cool but a little scary when a fan you have never met before comes in by themselves! And the only way you can get into Wicked is by going in the door and telling the guy in there who you know and he will call up to them to see if they want you up there! And most of the time Kristy and Idina are pretty good sports about coming out of the main door unless they really have to be somewhere!

Posted: 12/22/03 at 8:40pmI think if people wanna just take a look at the backstage area of a show/theatre then there should be backstage tours open to the public to many theatres. Something like the the New Amsterdam tour but u couldnt go backstage durin that tour. i think it would be very neat nd interesting! =D

Went backstage when our neighbor recenly played the Nazi in The Producers
I also went backstage once to meet Vincent Price who was a charming man. An underrated actor & he had no pretenions about himself. A shame his show did not last & I now wish I had gotten him to sign the Playbill. Spoke with me for about 15 minutes before he had to go to dinner with his wife. I was tempted to ask if I could join him. I think if I had he might actually have said OK as that was they type of person he was. His movies are great especially " House of Wax" to be seen only in 3 D & Theater of Blood where he kills all the critics who dismissed him. A film after my own heart

chinkie,
that idea is NOT good at all.. most theatres are VERY cramped bactage as it is with just show stuff, let alone making room to squeeze members of teh public in AND make it safe for members of teh public who haev NO clue how to behave backstage.. backstage can be dangerous if you screw with the wrong stuff

In regards to the awkwardness of being backstage -- I have to say, the only times I've ever been back stage at any show or concert, it's to wait for a performer I know in the cast. Even though I know the said person I'm waiting for and they've either put my name down to come back or told me to come back there after the show, I still feel really strange being back there... I can't imagine how awkward it would get if you didn't know anyone. Actually, I've been with a friend backstage where she knew someone and I didn't know a single person and I felt completely out of place. There's really nothing 'magical' about being backstage... unless you're getting a tour of the sets and costumes and such, there's nothing too interesting about it. I actually think it takes away for the experience of being at the theatre seeing what goes on behind the scenes.
But yeah... if your interest is meeting the actors in the show, I'd say send a letter backstage and wait for them to come out. Be patient... if they don't come out, there's not much more you can do. I'm sure you'll get an opportunity to meet them one day. Going back stage for the sole reason of meeting an actor is pushing it a bit. Unless they invite you back themself, I wouldn't request it. I agree -- they're going to be exhausted after the show and the only people they'll wait to see in their 'space' if anyone is their family and friends. I dunno, your dressing room's kind of like your sanctuary when you're doing a show... its your place of solitude.... when you have strangers walking in at random when all you want to do is go home and sleep... it's kind of stepping over those boundaries. If they're in a place to meet and greet their public, then they'll go out the stage door, you know?

Posted: 12/22/03 at 9:38pmI have to agree with those people who feel that going backstage should be left to family members and friends of those working there. Most of the time, there isn't all that much to see backstage after a show anyway, and even if you have been invited back there, as I have been, you can feel extremely awkward. One time while waiting backstage after a show for a friend (I'm not gonna use any names) my friend left me with one of the stars in their dressing room because he had to go talk to some people. I felt horribly embarrassed, plus the person whose dressing room I was occupying was unable to get their stuff together and leave until I was gone. Extremely mortifying, and awkward for both of us. Anyhow, there usually isn't all that much to see backstage, and it sort of crushes any aura of magic the show had for you. So I wouldn't really recommend trying that hard to get back there.

Yes...you don't have to go backstage to meet actors at Broadway shows, because they normally come out of the stage door, and if you have something to say to them, or if you want them to sign something and have a picture taken, they're usually more than happy to oblige. Getting backstage without knowing someone is quite a feat, because security at stage doors in general (especially in shows that star high profile people) is high, and the possibility of you actually getting back there without someone knowing you're coming or without being on some list is slim. The only time I managed to do that was when I inadvertently made friends with someone who knew a cast member in the show I was seeing, and he invited my family and I to go backstage and wait with him.
Seriously, do the stage door thing. It's worth it, and it's less awkward!
The Wicked stage door is actually on 51st Street. An usher/box office person will be more than happy to direct you.

I think we all get the point. LOL! Addressing the "backstage tour" issue. Some theaters used to do this, unless things have changed in the past 2 years. I used to host groups to NYC and do this pretty regularly. You have to write to the stage manager of the theater to ask if there is an arrangement for a " meet and greet" for your group. A group can be small 6-10 people or large 50+. The requirements were a collective donation to a charity supported by the theater BCEFA, etc. and was determined by the group size. It was about $10 a head at the time.
For this you were escorted throught the main lobby back into the theater to sit in the orchestra. A cast member or members would come out for a brief (15 min) Q&A. Somtimes an actor or stage personell would tour you through the costume & wig room, once everyone had left the area. Depending on the actors, photos and signings were allowed.
Things varied according to each theater's policy and each actors willingness to stay longer. Again, I don't know if this still happens. It's worth a call to the theater house manager to ask.
