GIRLSTAR at Signature Theatre in D.C.

Is anyone going to go down to see this? I saw Desi Oakley in WICKED and thought she was fantastic.

World Premiere:
Girlstar
Oct. 13 – Nov. 15, 2015
MAX Theatre
Signature favorite Donna Migliaccio stars in this fantastical world premiere musical fairytale, brimming with magic, darkness and blinding ambition.
Legendary record producer Daniella Espere is searching for her next international sensation. She discovers it in her long-lost niece, Tina, who dreams of being a world-famous pop star. Despite warning signs that all may not be as it seems, the two eagerly forge a mother/daughter bond and Daniella transforms Tina’s image, voice and talent into star quality – but not by the usual means.
With an electrifying pop-laden score, Girlstar invites audiences of all ages to follow one girl’s breathtaking journey and asks, how far is too far to go to become a star?
Book & Lyrics by Anton Dudley
Music by Brian Feinstein
Directed by Eric Schaeffer

I saw a reading of this when it was called Tina Girlstar back in 2009, at New York Stage & Film/Powerhouse Theatre at Vassar. It a very fun, sort of campy show; I had assumed it simply was abandoned after all this time. I'm glad it's been worked on and having a production.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

I saw it this past Saturday night. Desi killed it as Tina and played a 16yr old very convincingly. It's very campy with magic and fantasy. The songs are very catchy though. My audience was a bit old(I'm guessing subscribers) and they didn't seem to enjoy it as much as the younger people did. I'll be back to see it later in the run.

Go see it! it's a fantastic show, and Desi Oakley is fabulous indeed! They should make her Elphaba at some point in the future, and her voice indeed is very similar to Caroline Bowman's. but everyone in the show is wonderful, another great show from Eric Schaeffer. But Desi was indeed the real star, you won't be disappointed. Desi, if you're reading this, I was the Wicked weirdo wearing the shirt, hope to see you back in the land of Oz again, I hope Lee Slobotkin is the next Boq at the Gershwin, you were fabulous...

How much does Donna Migliaccio have to do in the show? I'm so tired of seeing her in every show at Signature that her presence is enough to make me consider not seeing the show. I don't get the appeal that she seems to have for some people.

^She plays Desi's aunt and could probably be considered her costar. She is the story teller (I guess that's a good way to describe her). She was good but nothing spectacular IMO. She was loud and a bit overbearing/over the top. Drowns out Desi when they sing together.

Ugh. Guess I'll be donating my ticket back to the theater. I'd never make it through the whole show if she's prominent in it. I still have painful memories of her as the Reciter in Pacific Overtures many years ago. About all I can take at a time is a cameo appearance (Jack's Mother in Into the Woods, Mazeppa in Gypsy, Emma Goldman in Ragtime).

Not to mention I've been really underwhelmed by most of what Signature has done lately. The Fix was horribly directed in my opinion (as was last season's Sunday in the Park with George).

^Go see the show for Desi. She's incredible. So are the ladies that play Piper and Neela.
