GORGEOUS

Posted: 7/6/04 at 12:25amI know there are a million threads about BARE, but honestly.....can there be too many? I am listening to the full soundtrack (live) and I have to say...IT IS GORGEOUS. OMG. This is what the theatre has been missing since the debut of RENT. I mean, I teared up at the end of the recording. I love the show, but the one song I keep hitting repeat is "See Me." How great is that song? The melody is just.....Oooo I love it, even though it is a hard song (subject wise). I can't wait until the actual cd comes out. I will have to keep buying copies because they will get messed up from playing it so much.

Posted: 7/6/04 at 1:34amTechnically, soundtracks are from movies. Cast recordings are from shows. I know this, yet I keep saying it. WHHHHHYYYYYY??

because it is a recording of the cast
not a soundtrack to a film

"What's wrong with calling it a soundtrack?"
Everything.
Understand that, please, and smile and be on your merry way.

Posted: 7/6/04 at 1:38amMussetta, this is not a dictatorship. I guess I just got used to saying soundtrack because they are in the SOUNDTRACK section of the record store.

Record stores are lazy and ineffecient.
Resistance is futile.

Posted: 7/6/04 at 10:36amat the borders near my house, they actually have a soundtrack section and a cast recording section. its so nice to only be looking at cast recordings as you browse. weeding through a bunch of movie soundtracks is always the worst. Updated On: 7/6/04 at 10:36 AM

J. - If you look at the actual CDs, you will notice that not a single recording is labelled as a soundtrack on the liners. Sometimes ther is such a thing as a Broadway soundtrack, but that is simply prerecorded sound effects used in a play or musical, but they are not something that is recorded and distributed for sale.
Often "soundtrack" is misused for film CDs. A soundtrack actually includes all dialogue and special effects. What is often sold in stores is the song catalogue used for the film or the original score.
But hey, if you want to go on saying you have the soundtracks to Broadway musicals, even when you know better, it is most certainly your right. Just don't be surprised when people react to it again.

Yippee! Another thread about BARE (kinda)! I must contribute!
Soundtrack vs. cast recording: the reason why "soundtrack" is a bad word to describe a cast recording is because the word signifies an underlying audio track that is used on top of the visuals -- like the score in a film. It doesn't work for theatre, which is live and everything is performed rather than taped-and-played.
Back to BARE:
This is what the theatre has been missing since the debut of RENT. I mean, I teared up at the end of the recording
If you think the recording is emotional, you should see the actual show! There's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing Michael Arden's sunshine smile melt as Peter faces devestating emotional strife. It's powerful stuff.
