re: GRIND!

I remember that the Overture was longer than what's on the recording, specifically the "Why, Mama, Why?" section. There are also a couple of musical numbers missing from the recording: "Cadava," which was a burlesque doctor's sketch, and two production numbers, "From the Ankles Down" and "A Century of Progress". One of those two production numbers had very elaborate costumes and headresses for the girls, I seem to recall. The melody for "Cadava" was that little ragtime figure that is heard whenever Romaine is onstage. (It's heard before the "I hate to mention it" routine in the opening number, and throughout "Timing").
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

re: GRIND!

Both A Dolls Life and Grind have FANTASTIC scores - Grossman's best, in my opinion. The scripts lack a bit, but still have a lot of potential. A little bit of rewriting in both could bring up two outstanding pieces of musical theater.
Concepts and ideas like these are what Broadway now lacks. That - willingness to take a risk at doing something truly edgy (and yes, I know Spring Awakening is edgy), but I mean something with a classical score like A Dolls Life or an exciting, beautifully lyrical piece such as Grind. The decay of these risk shows from Broadway is what is truly going to bring about the true Broadways end.
