I was wondering how often gavin doesn’t go on in hello dolly? i am seeing the show in the beginning of march and really want to see him in it! is there a better chance of him being on friday night rather than saturday night?
Based on some posts here he appears to miss occasionally but it doesn't appear to be anything to be concerned about. I've seen the show 5 times and never had a principal actor understudy in any role. It seems difficult to predict whether he'd more likely be there on a Friday or Saturday - they are both prime nights that actors seem to not miss often. But I guess in theory because Friday isn't a two-show day maybe that might be the safer bet?

I'm another one of the lucky fellas. I've seen this production a dozen times and there's never been a cast replacement.

We saw it in previews last March and had an understudy for Creel. I think his last name was White? He was awesome!

Yes! I can't imagine how it could've been any better.
I wanted to see Gavin but saw White instead who I thought sang the part really well but other than that was a disappointment.
Christian Dante White is good. Gavin Creel is great.

The (very excellant) "Hello Dolly" bootleg that's been making the rounds online is from a March '17 preview in which White performed. He's amazing.

Thats what I was thinking too! thank you! I'm sure his understudy is really good but I've loved gavin for so long I would be disappointed if i didn't get to see him

And, as luck would have it, the day I went to see it an u/s was on for him. He was Nathan Madden, and while he wasn’t bad (far from it), I can’t say I wasn’t dissapointed. The role is great though; he’s a genuinely funny character no matter who’s playing him.
I'll be seeing Bernadette for the first time on opening night, and I'm almost as excited to see Gavin again, for the fourth time. I'm sure that his understudies are great, but, at this point, I would be disappointed to see the show without him in it. I love him so much in this role.
