Gender Blind Les Miz

Posted: 11/15/04 at 9:41pmI've fallen in love with this idea. Casting male roles with females and female roles with guys. I think it would be a fun twist. Especially Fantine, and Eponine as guys. And Either Javert OR Valjean, and then Enjorlas as girls. I think having COsette and Marius be the same but then have Eponine be a guy would be awsome. Besides I wanna play some of the male parts. :) A feminine Javert, hmmmmm.

It's in the contract that girls cannot play boys, and vice versa... I'm in the production this year.
Fun idea, though

Posted: 11/15/04 at 10:06pmI have a hard time believeing that a man would have the same emotions as Eponine...but thats just my opinion.

I actually was thinking the opposite... I couldn't imagine a woman having the emotions for EMPTY CHAIRS AT EMPTY TABLES and JAVERT'S SUICIDE.
I think that Les Miserables is great as is.

Posted: 11/15/04 at 10:21pmi think the only character that bway allowed a little girl to play was gavroche.

Posted: 11/15/04 at 10:22pmreally? I think that's just weird. I guess it would work okay, but I think it works better as a little boy. It just seems more realistic to me, in the time period and just the way the performance goes.

Really? I'm a guy, and of all the characters in Les Miz, I identify most with Eponine.
Maybe it's a gay man thing....
#12re: Gender Blind Les Miz
Posted: 11/15/04 at 11:14pmThat was kinda the point. A gay man in love with a straight man who alreadys loves someone.

When we did our amateur performance the summer before my junior year of high school (I'm only in my first year of college now), I almost got to play Enjolras. I was so excited about that. The guy we had playing Enjolras was an awful slacker who skipped too many rehearsals and got kicked out, and our director said that, if the other guy she'd called didn't get back to her, I could play Enjolras -- and I did for a few rehearsals.
Alas, he got back to her.
So I think it would be interesting to see. I don't know how well some of the roles would work though -- a man playing Cosette or Fantine?

Don't forget that some of the "male" students at the barricade were actually women, including Fantine in disguise.
Of course, in THE PRODUCERS, women play some of the men auditioning for Hitler, and men play some of the little old ladies.

No, that would be a straight woman in love with a gay man in love with someone else (a gay man). So it'll be just like female Eponine anyway, except Cosette is a man.

Harvey singing "Everyday you walk with stronger steps you walk with longer steps the worst if over" lol - Cosette
Also I totally see why you would want to play a guys role because honestly as creepy as it is Sweeney seems like a fun part to me, especially in Epiphany you could have alot of fun with it but alas, sweeney will never be a girl!
