"This proves my point that the average tourist is stupid."
That makes you sound pretty ignorant. The average tourist isn't stupid. The just do not know much about theater.

Tourists are stupid and the people who work in any sort of shop in times square know it and take advantage of it. Tourists know that things in NYC are pricy but places in times square take advantage of that by selling things that you can easilly get 10-20 bucks cheaper in other places in the city. As for Phantom being a good show or not, I am convinced that the reason why people flock to it is because its a show they know of. They are spending their money on that instead of something new because they think that if it's a well known name it must be good. There is another thread on this board talking about what would ever pass Phantom to be the longest running show. One poseter there talked about how it's sad that people are flocking to Phantom just because they know the name and not giving other new shows a fair chance just because they don't know much about them. Personally, I cannot tell you the number of times I walked passed Drowsy and heard someone think that it was a sleezy club located within the hotel as oppose to a broadway show.
And about pointing out the fact that my spelling is not the best. All I can say is this. In all the posts you have ever written I have trouble believeing that you guys NEVER EVER made a single grammar or spelling error EVER. This is just a good example of the pot calling the kettle black.

I've never made such errors. Sometimes I've done it on purpose for comedic effect, but if it's an actual error, I'll always correct it. I'd rather people assume I'm stupid because of what I have to say rather than because of how I say it. I mean, I'm apparently just another tourist, I've got to score all the intelligence points where I can. :P

PROOFREAD YOUR POSTS!!!!!! SPELLCHECK!!!!!!! LEARN FROM PAST MISTAKES!!!!!
And tell us all about how expert you are when you are in Paris, or London, or Dubai, or even Omaha. Someplace you've never been and are feeling just a little bit out of place. And how wrong the Parisians are when they start calling you stupid. Of course, unless you are fluent in French (and for all I know, you might be) you won't understand a word they are saying.
Especially if your verbal communication skills are anything like your written ones. In any language.

Oh really? I find this very hard to believe.

You were calling tourists stupid because they don't know anything about theater, not because they buy expensive things which they could easily get cheaper somewhere else.
Just because someone isn't an "expert" in an area you say you are doesn't make them stupid.
What's wrong with a tourist wanting to see Phantom? So what? It's a name people know, and it may even open up doors for people to become interested in other shows. It's not like Phantom is the highest grossing show on Broadway now. It's not the only show people are seeing. If you look at the grosses this past week, you can see that A Chorus Line, Avenue Q, and Spring Awakening have filled a pretty decent capacity.

It goes both ways, actually. I heard some New Yorkers say some really "stupid", or rather "inaccurate," things about New Orleans and Mardi Gras when I was in Times Square this year, but I did not think they were stupid. I knew that they are not from here and thus are not informed. Tourists may be uninformed. And tourists KNOW about tourist traps, but sometimes that's the fun thing about being a tourist. Tell me, if you came to New Orleans, would you not buy anything from the French Quarter? You know the French Quarter is a total tourist trap, but you'd probably go there anyway, correct? It's the same thing that happens when people go to New York. People know very well they can get things cheaper elsewhere, but they get caught up in the moment. It has nothing to do with intelligence. And what I don't understand is why people in New York have such an "I'm better than you" attitude towards tourists. In New Orleans, even before Katrina, we greet our tourists with affection because we know they are a source of commerce. They give people jobs. If it weren't for the tourists, most of the shops in times square would be out of business. Tourists are a part of life in any big city. Get used to them.

Posted: 3/15/07 at 9:35pmExactly, lesmisforever. It's fun to make fun of tourists, but the reality is that every big city needs them to sustain the very things that make that particular city special. Especially New York. And even us snotty New Yorkers are tourists when we travel to other cities. Whether we like it or not, we are.

New Yorkers do sometimes care about themselves. For instense I was doing a show that had rehersals in the times square area. I got pissed when I would try to walk five blocks in about 15 min. I think that New Yorkers get pised towards tourists because its something that gets in there way and one more thing they have to deal with during the day. I am nice to tourists but when I am done with talking to them I can't count the number of times after they left where I said to myself " oh my god."
But, I did see a few people at different times look at the sign for Drowsy and eiather didn't know what the hell it was or thought it was some club at the hotel because the sign is right outside the hotel.

winston89...I'm sorry but now I just see that you seem to be bitter about just everything. Just remember that without tourists coming into this city, there really would not be a Broadway. Today's shows carry enormous financial budgets and without the money that these so called "stupid" tourists bring in, Broadway shows could not survive and so many people would be out of work. Yes, while sometimes I too get annoyed at all the people running around the city, the fact is, I chose to live here. If "stupid" tourists annoy you so much, then just get out. If you are in theatre or are hoping to be in theatre, I wouldn't knock the tourists...they are a Broadway performer's bread.

The more Winston says, the more he exposes himself, thus destroying any credibility he might have left.
