I was going over the creative team for the upcoming stage adaptation of THE LITTLE MERMAID and wanted to acquaint myself with some of George Tsypin's past works since I've heard so much talk about how he designs for scale and is very conceptual.
I stumbled across a photo gallery with set designs from past productions he's worked on. All I can say is WOW. I am very interested to see what he does with MERMAID.

Posted: 12/6/06 at 9:56pmWow- I didn't know Tsypin was invloved with The Little Mermaid. He is very well known in the opera world for his designs, which are full of massive mechanical and industrial elements (as you can see from that photo gallery). He came to scenic design after first making a name for himself as an architect. He also has a very close working relationship with Julie Taymor (which may explain why he's working on a Disney show)- they last worked together on the opera GRENDEL.

Posted: 12/7/06 at 12:11amWow. These are all really amazing looking. But honestly, I don't get how half of them actually work for the production because they just seem to be pictures. But the sets for Little Mermaid will definetly be one of the (hopefully many) strong points of the show.

Hah...i'm pretty sure I posted that site a little while back in a discussion about Little Mermaid. Tsypin has become one of my favourite designers. I think he is the perfect designer for Little Mermaid, because lately he has been using a lot of translucent materials, which lends itself well to an essentially underwater tale.
And as far as his West Side Story set he was trying to create a vision of a world that was both building up and falling apart at the same time...a recurring theme in his work...althout this time it was very much a reference to 9/11.
Also...because I am a huge shill...check out MY set designs in this thread: https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=919088&boardname=off&dt=34

They will need a Huge theatre for his work.
And Bob Crowley's over blown stuff for TARZAN
was a part of the problem.
They just won't learn will they?
THE LITTLE MERMAID with an Opera Director and Designer on paper sounds great.
But could be another Mistake, or not.
Who knows, at least they will be putting their $ where their mouth is.
I quess they are looking at the Palace?

They did...but actually Zambello has a surprising lack of musicals on her resume. Besides West Side Story, Show Boat and Alladin I really can't think of any. But I still think they will do a great job.
