I don't hate Gerard's voice, I just sort of find that it has certain....um....duck-like qualities. Here's what I think:
Even though Gerard souds alright in the movie, they probably had to record the songs many times before he got them right. Also, even though he could stand in a booth and sing songs, doing them live on stage and moving is very different. So, if they have the songs pre-recorded for him onstage as he acts, I think he'll do a fine job. If not. Run. Fast. Far away.
The poster made it very clear. Don't ya love newbies!
I think Gerard or Nick Lachey should take over. Hopefully they will be able to make Phantoms investment back before everone runs to see the movie and the theater is empty.
Or maybe Kristen could come in and save the show?
I really think the person who should be taking over on Broadway is Michael Crawford.
Since he really got screwed out of playing the Phantom in the movie, he is the one who deserves it. Andy owes him one...
I know he's currently in Andy's show "The Woman in White" right now in London, but I hope he decides to come back to "Phantom" someday soon! He OWNS that role.....at least onstage. I'd be one of the first in line to buy a ticket!
"Between our hearts let nothing intervene.
Between our eyes the only sight I've seen
Is lustrous moonfall as it blinds my view
So that soon I only see but you."
-Moonfall-"The Mystery of Edwin Drood"
After seeing Gerard's performance all I can say is that it was lacking. He is an average Phantom but a better actor choice could have been made and made the role exciting. I think his voice is thin and not full bodied as we expect and want the Phantom to sound. It was like having an American Idol do the role.
Heck..I'm sure Clay could have done it!

LOL
If Phantom was in danger of closing they wouldn't have stopped selling discount tix. Point of fact, the last day you could buy a discount ticket for Phantom was the 21rst. The producers know they can get full price now. There are no discounts for the foreseeable future.
I know, I have a membership with a discounter and I was checking for tix in feb. Sigh.
Gerry did a great job. Yeah, there were times when I raised my eyebrow, but I think that some of it fits the show. He's incredibly sensual through PTO and Music of the Night. But after the unmasking, having him be harsher and more gruff works with the overall concept. The phantom has been unmasked and we're forced to deal with the less beautiful side of his personality and looks...why not have the tone of the singing reflect that. I'm not saying I'd want to pay 100 to hear that, but for the movie and in the moment, I thought it worked quite well.
Flame away
