I'm thinking of taking the train down from NYC to Signature. I'm unfamiliar with the DC area so am essentially going in blind. Is there a train I can take directly to Signature or do I need to go to DC and then take other transportation?

You can take a Megabus/Bolt Bus into DC, and then take the metro to Arlington, and then a cab to Signature.
There may be a faster way to do it, but that's the way I've done it in the past.
Signature is close enough to DC for a cab to take me right? Sorry, I really don't have a clue about the DC area and am having a hard time visualizing it from the maps I'm looking at.

Unless it's changed since I lived there, cabs from DC don't usually go into NoVA - or if they do, there's a big time fee attached. Mega or Bolt, then the Metro to Pentagon City and then a cab is your best (and cheapest) bet.

From the Signature site:
•The closest Metro stop to Signature is Pentagon City. From there, Signature Theatre is only a short taxi ride away. A taxi stand is located in front of the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The fare is approximately $7.
•The Pentagon Bus Terminal is steps from Pentagon Metro station. From the bus terminal, the 7A, 7F, 25A and 25D buses can be taken to the Shirlington Transit Centre, around the corner from the Theatre. The Transit Centre is the first stop on the bus from Pentagon. Buses arrive approximately every 10 to 15 minutes.
If you do take the train to Union Station DC, cabs WILL take you to Signature in Arlington, but it may cost you $30-$40. Otherwise, from Union Station take the Metro Red Line to Metro Center, switch to the Blue Line to Pentagon City, and then grab a cab.

I live in Pentagon City, and cab fare to Signature usually costs me about $10-$12. More often now I take a bus from the Pentagon metro stop. You can get to Pentagon/Pentagon City metro stops via the blue line from Metro Center or the yellow line from Gallery Place-Chinatown. The yellow line is usually quicker (fewer stops).

All of these methods are viable ways to get there.
The thing now is to realize that it is a lot easier than all these steps sound. It is really boom, boom, boom, and you're there. You will need to call a cab from the theatre after the show to get you back to the Metro.
If you take the mega or the Bolt Bus, you'll have money to stay at a hotel and not end up dead from a day trip.
However you decide to travel, you're in for a treat if you've never been to signature.
