I just saw a production of "Cabaret" recently and I read that Gina Gershon played Sally Bowles at one point. How was she?
Gina is actually my favorite Sally that I've seen. I thought that she had the perfect mixture of sexiness and vulnerability, but also this sort of dirty element that I didn't buy in some of the Sallys who played the character a little sweeter. Her "Mein Herr" in particular was spot-on and incrredibly sexy. She also struck me as appropriately ditzy without being too much. A really interesting interpretation, I think.
<---------- My favorite Sally.
I can definitely see her in it
I loved Gina as Sally. She was the right mix of flighty and sexy. I loved her voice, because there was this quality about it that's really alluring. She really played up to the drug addict aspect of the character. Her "Mein Herr" is my favorite.
Didn't she add some things, image-wise, to the character that remained with the other Sallys to follow?

I'm not sure, but I'd be interested to know if so.
She smeared her make up during the number Cabaret. You couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a shiner or if her make up was just smeared. It looked awesome. She was amazing. Acted and sang the **** out of the role. There used to be some GREAT documentation of her role on a certain site from a GREAT .... document of her performance with Raul as the Emcee. It is an AMAZING documentation of the show if anyone can get their hands on the .... document.
(the documentation of which i speak took place on 11/13/01 for anyone curious)
This .....documentation is exactly how I came to see her divine performance
Gina Gershon is very underrated. She has given wonderful performances in stinker films (like Showgirls) and great performances in good films (well, I consider Bound a good film and I'm sticking with that) and I really liked her turn in "Cabaret." As was mentioned above, she got the gritty down just right.
She did get the gritty down just right. And she was 100% Sally. There was no trace of Gina anywhere. Her acting and vocals were spot on. The moment she stepped onto the stage I was captivated by this woman.
all i can hear now is cristal connors saying, "I've always wanted to play Broadway."
"Darlin..."
SHE is quite a great actress - and DEFINTIELY underrated.
i saw her twice.. she was amazing. the perfect sally. and, slightly OT, has anyone caught her guest shots on UGLY BETTY? she's a scream!
she's an amazing and very underrated performer.
i have a certain format(which we cant talk about ) of her in this show at 54 and she was amazing
was very surprised
I adore the growl-y quality that her voice had in certain songs. She sung the part surprisingly well.
