Actually, I think both the 2000 off-Broadway and the 2001 tour are great recordings. I think with the off-Broadway you're getting probably a quintessential 'traditional' recording of the score. They used pretty close to the original instrumentation and while the arrangements have been tweaked a bit, they're still in the spirit of the folk/rock of the original production.
The Tour is a 'new' twist on the music but its done correctly. The arrangements are heavier and are more reflective of modern music but they're still true to the intent of the piece and use the musical stylings of some of the more contemporary rock songwriters (Tori Amos, Dave Matthews and the like.) The Tour 'Tower of Babbel' was a very compelling interpretation of the scene, using multi-media as a modern take on how philosophers today communicate with the world.
I'm more inclined to listen to the 2001 recording, actually. I like the heavier grooves.

Don't get me wrong, I love the new recording, but I also would like the one with shoshana bean. I don't have a job so it's hard for me to get money to buy both.

yes, the orchestrations on teh tour ecording are good and I do like the new twist as well.
It's all about the off-broadway cast though! Phenominal voices in there.
I strongly dislike the 2001 touring cast recording because it loses the message of the show largely..it's overdone and too techno. 2000 is very, very good, but again a little too much "pop concert" Godspell..I much prefer the movie and original soundtrack. Though they're what you might now call "dated," you can really get the feeling of the show.
I've just recently found out that this year's college production' is going to be Godspell, and since I want to auidtion for this years show, but have never seen/heard Godspell this thread helped me out a lot. lol
From what I found out about the characters personalities I'm thinking I'd quite like to play Sonia.
Does anybody have any idea's on a good/fun character to audition for?

wait, which one is sonia? you have to name the titles of the songs she sings cuz their names often change.
is she "Turn Back O Man"??

I like the OG Godspell Cd, but some tunes on the 2001 cd, with Shoshana ESPECIALLY really rock.
Yes, she is "Turn Back, O' Man". As far as girl parts go, I would audition for Joanne. She is the overconfident, snobby one- and she gets to sing "Oh, Bless The Lord", which is my favorite song in the show. But you need to have an amazing voice to signt hat song.

The Tour looks amazing. Their vision for the beginning is awesome. I wish I could have caught it. It looks awesome. Doesn't Jesus remind you of Hunter Foster?

The tour Jesus is Joe Carney, who I just saw in "Escape From Pterodactyl Island" at the Fringe. Catherine Carpenter from the Off Broadway Godspell also happens to be in it.
Interesting tidbit about the origin of Godspell. The creator (John Michael Tebelak) was two weeks away from turning in his thesis for Carnegie Mellon and hadn't written a word. On his way into a church for an Easter morning service (wearing his usual clothes- tie dye and overalls) he was stopped and frisked for drugs. (Some say that the greatest miracle that morning was that he actually didn't have any on him at that moment). Determined to write a "mass" for his generation, he wrote a 2 act play based on the Gospell of Matthew (mostly).
When they decided to do it downtown, the producers suggested that they add music to the show. Stephen Schwartz was brought in and wrote the music in less than two weeks, taking much of the text from old hymns and scripture.

SHOSHANA = scene stealer!

Let me make this clear...on the cast recording with shoshana, it says 2000 off-broadway cast, not 2001! This is what made me get the 2001 tour.
