Golden Boy (musical)

The discussion on here about the Porgy & Bess musical, due to memories of the controversial film adaptation of the opera being part of Karina Longworth's Sammy Davis Jr season of You Must Remember This made me think about this musical, and why it has largely been forgotten.

Maybe it was so closely associated with David that no one else has wanted to touch it, which makes it even more of a shame that it wasn't filmed in come capacity. I've read the script and listened to the cast recording, and I really think there's potential in it for contemporary directors and audiences. It's tempting to think it could be another show that Lincoln Center could revive as part of their pattern of semi-revisionist takes on seemingly dated material, but then they staged the Odets play just about a decade ago, which might give them pause about doing the musical.

Golden Boy (musical)

I would LOVE to have a producton of Golden Boy. I love the score, and the opening number is so cool. I think that it seems much like a product of the time, 1960's. But, like other products of their time, they have a lot to say, especially in this climate.

Golden Boy (musical)

Encores did it in 2002 with Alfonso Ribeiro as Joe. It was an OK production with a very good score but a lousy book. With a revised book, Justin Henry would be perfect for this -- maybe the next Bart Sher musical at LCT?? Sher's production of Awake and Sing was possibly a career best for him.
