NY TIMES put together an entertaining and enjoyable Parental Guidance feature today. Outside of the Disney musicals, it provides pointers on what parents should know about the other Broadway musicals and whether they are appropriate for the kids they're bringing along.

VISUAL AID:
This is fantastic. Provides the DRAWS and CAVEATS of each show... very accurately and sardonically. I got a kick out of "conformity" as a warning in Grease

I certainly hope parents don't take some of the caveats seriously.

We're trying to build Broadway up, are we not?

"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster. "Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."

Yeah, the caveats, I think for the most part were supposed to be funny. But I could see some parents taking them seriously.

Since I take my high school students to shows all the time, I have some rules in mind in terms of what's appropriate. I only let the juniors and seniors see Spring Awakening and Avenue Q, but otherwise, all the other shows (that my students would want to see) are pretty much all ages.
