In an episode last week, Bart became a manufacturer of T-shirts with snappy slogans. One of the T-shirts had the slogan, "Jews for Jebus".

Please tell me who's playing the part that Justin Guarini backed out of...I want to know if they made the part smaller from when I saw it at Vassar... Can't think of any other reason Guarini would leave... he was niiiiiiiiiiice to look at

I can tell you without seeing it that Sebastian Arcelus is playing that role. I believe the character name is Jan? I doubt they made the role smaller, but it's possible. I'm a fan of Seb's though, so I'll be paying attention.

Yes...If anyone is posting a review please include as much info as possible on Heidi Ettinger's set. I can't wait to see what she cooks up because this is definitely not her typical kind of show. And also if anyone comes across any pictures of the set please PM me the links.

Yes, I agree, Justin sure looked good in that wetsuit and his dancing and singing were just wonderful. I wish we could have seen him in Good Vibrations on Broadway, however at the KitchenSink2 event last Sunday, Justin explained that he liked the show, he liked the cast, the part was good, and he couldve done the show, and would like to do Broadway in the future, but there was somthing else that presented itself, an opportunity, that he just felt he had to take, so he chose to leave the show. He hinted that it would be on T.V after the first of the year, but he didnt specify further than that.

First of all, let me assure you, I am not a shill. Period. I did attend last night's opening of the previews of Good Vibrations. In fact, I sat two seats away from the guy who runs this board (I didn't catch your name, but I enjoyed critiquing the show with you and your friend). I also saw the workshop version in Poughkeepsie (at Vassar). That said....here is my take on the good...and the not-so-good of Good Vibrations.
It IS a fun show. It could be MORE fun...and I do believe that before its real opening night, it will be. The cast is talented, energetic and hard-working. They can sing AND they can dance. There was a lot going on most of the time....sometimes too much. But ya just didn't get bored. The music is, of course, great. It's the Beach Boys' music, so what else would it be but great? The songs were delivered well and with heart (for the most part) and some of the acapella numbers were damned good. The music and choreography kept your feet tapping and made you wish you were up there dancing, too.
Kate Reinders (Caroline) was a natural and a stand-out. The only problem I had with her character is that she starts off being a nerd and ends up being the coolest chick on the beach. It wasn't clear to me how she made that transition. THAT needed work. But she was adorable and held her own throughout. David Larsen (Bobby) did very well. Some of the high notes were a bit too high for him, but he tried hard to deliver and, for the most part, he did. For a Broadway debut, I say..."good going, David".
The rest of the cast gave it their all from song one. I am not sure how the opening set matched the action. It began with the high school graduation dance, but it didn't look like a high school gym at all. The set in Act II was very effective, making it appear (again, for the most part) like you were near the ocean. One surfing number used hydraulic lifts (or some such thing) and was very cool. The scene where the 4 leads drive cross country was done with 4 red chairs. THAT needs some DRASTIC improvement. But later there was a sawed-off Mustang, so I guess it will be used instead of the chairs. Let's hope so.
In my opinion, the character and story development need work. It's got the right elements, but I wasn't engaged with any of the characters. I LIKED them. I had fun with them. But I just didn't FEEL them. I didn't KNOW them. Something was lacking. It was lacking at Vassar, and it still is.
And I HATED the ending. The finale...wasn't! Caroline and Bobby belong together. We all know they end up together...it's a beach story, for G-d's sake! So SHOW it. The show ended too quickly. One minute it was....and the next minute, it wasn't. In fact, I don't think that the audience was sure that it was over when it was over. There needs to be a BIG closing number that says SOMETHING. A rip-roarin', audience-participating closing number. At Vassar the cast came into the audience, throwing beach balls and dancing in the aisles with the young and old. It was a blast. They didn't do it last night. I missed it. I liked it. The audience at Vassar loved it. I say...bring it back!
Other things that need work....the surfers need to be TAN! How can you be in the sun all day and be alabaster? And some of the guys need to get rid of that body hair! YOUNG, right-out-of-high-school guys usually don't look that hairy! Wax, guys....wax! Most of the girls looked fabulous in their bikinis. (But since not everyone does...I guess those who didn't look so hot, made it more realistic. Not sure if it works or not). Some of the surfer-boys need to get buff! NOW!
It seemed that some of the scenes were a bit contrived to try and match the lyrics of the chosen song. I felt that there were some unnecessary songs, but that everyone just wanted to sing them. The story needs to work around those songs better.
There is a twist at the end with Jan and Dave....it came out of left field and could have been developed better....both before and after.
I think that a perfect way to begin the show would be with a 10-year high school reunion and make the rest a flashback.... then end the show back at the reunion. But the writer didn't ask me! Maybe he should have! Hey, Richard Dresser, waddaya think of the idea? If you like it...it's yours!
And lastly, although Sebastian was REALLY good as Jan (and great to look at), I sure missed Justin Guarini in the role. I am NOT a shill, but I AM a Justin fan. And he was fabulous at Vassar. Those who weren't his fans before, left being his fans. When he was onstage, he was a presence. His dance moves are incredible. Oh well.
All in all, I hope that the show makes it. It was a fun evening. Light, somewhat inane, but fun. I paid $91 a ticket...and I am not positive it was quite worth it YET. But the elements are there to make it happen. I hope that the missing pieces are addressed during previews. But it IS fun, fun, fun.
