I love Side Show (who doesn't?). I love Jane Eyre (just bought it!). I love ... hmmmm, what else can I love? Can any of you showtune intelligentsia advise me on some other recordings I should own...?
I'm thinking of more modern sounding shows, rather than older shows. I do own a lot of recordings, even some pretty obscure ones like Zombie Prom, The Fix and Romeo and Juliet The Musical so I need some more random ones.
Thanks readers!
Oh, Side Show and Jane Eyre are amazing recordings. I'm starting to think that Jane Eyre is my all-time favorite score. Call me cheesy, but I also happen to really like the soundtrack to Big, which was a BIG flop. Also, Steel Pier is kind of fun, and features Debra Monk, Karen Ziemba, and Kristen Chenoweth among others, so its worth it for that.
OH! If you like rare soundtracks, you have to get Weird Romance!!! It's an Alan Menken musical starring Ellen Greene and Jessica Molaskey and it's awesome! I think it may be out of print, though.....(although I have it..wink and a smile.)
Ooh! BIG! I forgot about that! Gotta add it to the Christmas list. Steel Pier is already on it!
Now...about that Alan Menken musical....let's see if I can find it...
Those are good recommendations though! Exactly what I wanted to hear... Any more good ideas?
Someone on this website led me to buy "is there life after high school" which is absolutely great (if you can find it not ridiculously expensive)
Also, the studio recording of a tale of two cities is wonderful.
and how can i forget you must get the taboo broadway cast recording!!! simply an amazing score!
Just a few more...they're not all rare, and they weren't all flops, but they're not musicals the average non-musical fan would know (As in, they're not Oklahoma, Les Mis, Phantom, or Wicked)
The Goodbye Girl
I'm Getting my act together and taking it on the road
The Life
Marie Christine
A New Brain
Randy Newman's Faust (concept cast)
Starmites (I bet you'd really enjoy this one, if you don't have it already!)
I can't seem to find the recording of Tale of Two Cities....can you give me some more info? It sounds interesting...
TABOO! Unfortunately, I suppose that counts.
Hey Emcee---Im gonna sound dumb and uninformed, but is there a cast recording of Taboo? and is it the actual Broadway cast? If there is, I must have missed that completely.
Yup. There's a London CR and an OBCR.
The only place to get it is actually through the website of the writers. They have a bunch of the songs on the site if you want to listen to it before you buy it.
Here's the website

Taboo is OK. I have the OLC and it's not a favourite of mine. Perhaps the Broadway version is better?
I love GOODBYE GIRL. The show wasn't great, but it had Bernadette Peters and Martin Short in the lead roles, so how could you beat that?
Wow. Looks like Im heading to Barnes and Noble after class today!!!!
re: Taboo. The B'way version is TEN times better, IMO, for several reasons: it sounds a lot more like a cast recording, if that makse sense. The orchestrations are done differently to make it sound more like a musical, whereas I always felt like the London one just sounded like a CD of Boy George's songs sung by other people. The OBCR is also worth it for the cast alone - serious talent... Raúl, Jeffrey, Euan (also on London, but you can't ever have enough Euan), Sarah, Cary, Liz... they were all so perfect.

Depending on your tastes, you might also enjoy ROMANCE ROMANCE with Scott Bakula. I came across it a few months ago in a used DC store, and it's a real charmer.
Romance, Romance is great! And Taboo-wise, I'll totally be getting the OBC...Raul Esparza. Hello!
Ooh! I'm glad u said that Emcee because I always thought the OLC sounded how you described it... I think I'll invest in the OBC. I want to hear Taboo done properly. I'm checking out Romance Romance now...
yaaaaay! I <3 the Taboo OBCR. It didn't leave my CD player for months.
Both WILD PARTY's
MACK AND MABEL (classic!)
DEAR WORLD
FLOYD COLLINS (best musical of the last ten years)
TABOO
CAROLINE OR CHANGE
GREENWILLOW
ANYONE CAN WHISTLE (Not Sondheim's best, but still brilliant)
REX (good, not great Richard Rodgers...Nicol Williamson ain't a bad singer!)
Crummy Recordings of terrific scores:
THE GOLDEN APPLE
THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM
LOVE Mack and Mabel.

If you're looking at WHISTLE, go for the concert recording, not the OBC. Better sound, more music. Well worth it.
