Oh! And MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG! How could I forget?!
Oh THE RINK!! Awesome one. Haven't I been helpful?
Ugggh. Can't agree about that concert recording of Anyone Can Whistle. Yes, it has "Be Like the Bluebird" and the real version of "I've Got You to Lean On," and the cut song, "There's Always a Woman," plus some extra (but not all) of the prelude music. But a lot of it is poorly played and poorly mixed, with the percussionist pounding away and overmiked. Also, "The Cookie Chase" is note complete on the original cast recording, but not in the concert recording. Bakula is better than Harry Guardino, but I still prefer Lansbury and Remick to Kahn and Peters in those roles. The Goddard Lieberson original recording still has a better sound mix than the concert, and in its recent CD rerelease, sounds better than ever.
Obscure Recordings (at least pretty obscure)...

TABOO (Bway version)! It's my favorite recording (it even tops the RENT recording on my list, which is REALLY scary). Something about it is just so amazing! I'm still upset that it closed after only 100 performances...

Actually, a lot of the record companies are rereleasing cast albums on CD, and we're talking old stuff -- 40s, 50s, early 60s musicals, even the great flops like DRAT THE CAT and SKYSCRAPER and GREENWILLOW. And God bless Jay Records, for keeping some of those other, more elusive scores alive.
Definitely, TABOO - it's sad that that would classify as a flop even though it inspired so many people. Anyway, others would have to be:
Jane Eyre
Follies (it was atleast a financial flop)
The Wild Party (Broadway version)
Steel Pier
The Scarlet Pimpernel

I don't think ROMANCE ROMANCE was a flop - it ran over a year, and with a castr of four, it couldn't have been thaty expensive to run.
THE RINK is great.
David Spencer's children's version of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA... it's not good. but, it's terribly catchy. It's what PHANTOM whould be like if Disney tried to do it... well, okay, it's even worse than that. it's sooooo cartoon like. But, I love "New World Order". I mean, don't get me wrong... this is a horrid show, but at the same time, I'm glad I have it. I'd never give it away, cuz' it's too funny. And I could totally see it as a show being done for a children's theatre company... Amazon.com has four used...

Despite its economy, ROMANCE ROMANCE didnt turn a profit.
The cast album of Parade is also quite good.
I don't love Side Show. I can barely listen to it. One or two songs lifted out of the score are ok, but stylistically, it is all over the map going in and out of period to the point where it seems more science fiction than drama.
I have a lengthy list of these recordings on a couple of other threads, so I'm not going to list them all again. I do think that Romance/Romance is one of the best recordings of one of the most overlooked musicals. The orchestrations are amazing. It makes such a small show sound huge and every song is a gem.
PS - I have the original London cast of Jeeves. It's pretty dull, but fun to hear the melodies he cut from the show to use in others.

Fav... Wasn't Time a concept album only? Was an original cast album made? Was Stephanie Lawrence on it?

Taboo is amazing. I'm really shocked it took me almost two months to catch onto the music. It hasnt left my CD player in quite a while (I even had to make a copy specifically for listening in my car lol)
Taboo and A Class Act are my favorites of the moment. Woot!

I SING! was a small show that ran off-Broadway a few years ago. It slipped by under the radar while it was out, but the new cast album has top notch talent. Peter Filichia just put it on his list of the 50 best off-Broadway scores of all time. (www.isingthemusical.com)
William Finn's IN TROUSERS is also amazing. Another small show whose legacy can mainly be found on the recording.

I like the recording to PHANTOM (Yeston version) but it sounds too much like Anastasia and lots of Disney musicals (Hunchback of Notre Dame to be exact).

I come to pimp Taboo.
But I will stand that it wasn't a flop.
Just go and buy the OBCR. It's fabulous!

I am late to this thread but I wanted to make a clarification on the Tale of Two Cities CD on page 1 of this thread. If you don't have a credit card you should still be able to purchase it. Footlite records in New York has it in stock and you could do a check by mail to the store. It takes a bit longer but you can still get it. If you can't figure out how to do a check by mail via the website alone PM me and I'll be more than willing to help you out. I personally love the show. It's always a good sign when someone other than me says good things about the cd. Either my talking it up a lot has helped, or word has just progressed naturally. Either way I am as happy as a clam that other people are discovering how good it is.
