Posted: 9/6/10 at 3:08pmGoodbye Come Fly Away you wonderful, under-appreciated, under-supported, under-discounted, under-recognized, under-nominated, misunderstood, oft ignored amazing dance musical. Best dancing on Broadway. Best band on Broadway. Congratulations to an amazing cast and company. Just when you were finding your stride and your audience and your price point....they pulled the plug. May you be treated better as a tour. Maybe if you do well on tour they'll bring you back and put you in the Nederlander or the Rogers or the Brooks Atkinson where you belong.

AGREED.
I was a the show yesterday and it was completely amazing. Twyla was there!!! The most beautiful theatrical experience I've ever had. After the show I was talking to a lot of the dancers and one of them said they actually might take the show to Vegas for a few months.....not so sure how I feel about that one. Anyway, Come Fly Away, you are such a special show and I will miss you greatly! Thank you for being so wonderful

Posted: 9/6/10 at 5:10pmIt was the most beautiful theatrical experience I've had. I have seen many, many musicals but none of them touch me the way Twyla's shows do, probably because as a dancer myself I can relate to the performers and appreciate them in dfferent ways than a non-dancer would. What made yesterday's show so beautiful to me was seeing the raw emotion and passion of all the performers on stage...it made the show that much more special. And seeing Twyla come onstage at the end of the show was just like a surreal experience to me. I admire her and all of her dancers so much, so seeing them together on stage taking their bows was like theatrical perfection for me. So yes, Come Fly Away is not everyone's cup of tea, but for myself in particular, yesterday's show was heaven.

I too was at the show yesterday. I enjoyed it. Here are some thoughts:
Karine Plantadit was RIDICULOUS. I was mesmerized every time she danced. Her expression, passion, and enthusiasm seeps through her pores, and she has some BEAUTIFULLY choreographed pieces. Especially the number where she was being thrown from person to person. And the "angry dance" where she got in a fight with her boyfriend.
All the numbers with Laura Mead/Charlie Neshyba-Hodges as Betsy and Marty were cute, but it got old quick. I think their storyline did not develop very far. I was impressed with the talent of both dancers.
John Selya was also fantastic. He danced with such vigor and desire, and he truly expressed his emotion through dance.
Rika Okamoto was extremely out of place. She was a good dancer, but everything from her costume to her choreography made her stand out as the sore thumb of the principals. And it doesnt help that she is the only Asian in the cast, which only aided in her demise.
The lighting and scenic design were stunning. I was almost brought to tears (ALMOST... not quite) when the stardrop transformed and created Sinatra's profile out of stars. Beautiful image.
My biggest letdown? The show was FAR to long. 2:15 with an intermission. I think the show would have benifited being only 90 minutes, no intermission. Bang through the show, wow the audience, and call it a day.
Also, I feel that there was not enough BIG group numbers. And by group numbers, I mean everyone dancing the same choreography. I can recall a single number where everyone was in unison, and that bothered me. There should have been more of a balance when the ensemble was used.
I also didn't care about the story, or lack there of.
Just my opinions.

Posted: 9/6/10 at 10:17pmI get to watch the load out tomorrow! I've never seen one done on broadway. It is unfortunate the show had to close though.

Aren't we all biased when it comes to this board and theatre in general? We like what we like and we don't what we don't. Some people on this board feel it's important to take it the next step and decide for other people what they should like or to mock people for what they like or don't like. What's the problem with being biased? Kikki327 liked the show, stated that he or she has a dance background and therefore and appreciation for what the show was. He or she was reporting back to all of us about being at the closing performance, what happened, what he or she heard about the future of the show and how special it was. What's the problem?
I will say that it's nice to see at least a few comments about the show on the board. I've been surprised over the run that there hasn't really been much discussion about the show. It's too bad they kept the ticket price so high for so long because I think that kept many people on the board, an elsewhere, from checking it out.
It will be interesting to see how the show did in the last week. Since they started discounting the show it has been getting better and better numbers. Last week it had a better gross than AI, ALNM, La Cage, ITH, Chicago, ROA, Fela, MDQ and N2N. It sold more seats than all those shows plus Addams Family (although Nathan was on vacation) and it likely pulled in at least $200,000 over its nut. Love the new search features in the Grosses by the way. Interesting to note too that if CFA was in the Nederlander then based on it's seats sold it would have been at 91.4% last week grossing $630,000+. MDQ did almost $200,000 less gross last week. So why is CFA closing and MDQ still running? No offense MDQ...you're just not doing that well and it's only going to get worse.
Kikki, interesting to hear about the Vegas connection. I think that would be terrific but I thought, based on an earlier report, that the show couldn't play Vegas because of some previous contractual arrangement with the rights to Frank Sinatra there. Any word on that? I wonder how that would effect the spring tour that has been mentioned to start in Chicago in May.

Justaguy2 - I had asked one of the dancers about them going on tour next May and she said they were going to find out in a few weeks if they were going on tour or going to Vegas. I feel like Vegas might cheese the show up a bit, but I do think it would do very well out there.
and yes, I am VERY biased when it comes to CFA, as I stated before how I love Twyla and her dancers, so obviously I'm going to enjoy it more than other people would. And like I said, seeing all of my favorite dancers and Twyla onstage together was a beautiful moment for me that I will never forget.
