So many threads have been started and been invaded by the usual school kids that i thought i would start one.
Lets PLEASE keep this for the Rent fans to say goodbye to the show.I know many people don't like the show for whatever reason and that's fine, we all love different shows, but lets not insult others etc because they don't share your opinion!!!, let the Rent fans have this thread.
Im not a Rent Head believe it or not (i think at 29 im to old to be a Rent Head lol), but i am a fan of the show.
I watched the Original Cast in 96/97 and was blown away, i had never seen anything like it.It was raw and full of energy, the cast were brilliant and connected and the atmosphere electric.
The show resonated with me that night, at 16 years old i was coming to terms with a friend of mine who had just died from AIDS, Up until that point i refused to see any positive, even though my friend had seen that the life he had was positive. After walking out of Rent i kept hearing 'No Day But Today' and it stuck with me, that was how he lived his life
That was the first night i had been truly able to say goodbye to him
For people of my age who have lost people to Aids Rent is more than a rock musical, it's more than a group of screaming kids writing on the wall, its more than the Pulitzer prize...its a piece of theatre that spoke to many people about things that many young people would not speak about.
And sure Rent has it's flaws, its not like its brilliant creator could keep playing around with the show and fixing it, so what we got was a raw passionate if not rough around the edges rock opera.
The last time i saw rent in NY was about 16 months ago and it was in a sorry state. The cast did not connect and did not seem to care about the material.I left the theatre thinking "it's time for Rent to say goodbye"...and it is
As my years have gone on ive lost more and more friends to a disease what many naive people think is not a concern anymore, hell i have had to battle my own things, but one thing which always stays in my head is 'No Day But Today'
So i say thank you Rent, for helping me get to that place that little bit quicker
