I consider the Continentals the "Broadway" of Christian/Gospel Music and they have branches worldwide with a main office in Ventura, CA.
They have 2 major Christian musicals to date and they are:
Joseph the Dreamer and David: A Man After God's Own Heart
Have you heard of them? I toured with them in 1999 and we did the "Mission of Love" Tour across the USA and overseas in Singapore and the Philippines.
Anybody here toured with them also?
That was one of the greatest moment of my life....and when I stopped being active in church...I still have the love of music in me that I gravitated towards showtunes, musicals and broadway.
How I would love for them to transfer to broadway.
Anybody heard of any Christian crossover to Broadway?
People will say Jesus Christ Superstar......yeah but I am more concerned about "Gospel Singing" and Contemporary Christian Music that is part of any Broadway/West-end Musicals since they are really soulful, powerful and moving!
I know it would be close to impossible for this cross-over to happen since "Christians" are very keen on evangelization and this may not be very suited nor welcomed to a diverse broadway crowd.
I am also interested in seeing a kinda "secularized" or less fire and brimstone type "Christian" Musical in Broadway much like I was interested in hearing some songs from Spring Awakening in that gospel/soulful fashion ( yeah I know Duncan Sheik is Buddisht).
I heard of Godspell, Thy Kingdom Come.....but I haven't seen nor heard the cast recording.
How I would love Prince of Egypt to be in Broadway!

You sound as intolerant as that "homophobe" Carol Channing.
Do you know who she is?

I've heard some of that music, and it's scary to say the least.
Not as bad as that God Hates Fags version of We Are The World that's on Youtube, but edging that way.
BFB :P
I used to be a right-wing, ultra-conservative, closeted and denial gay person before who terrorizes people on the street with our salvation tracts and evangelism until I cannot hide from the truth anymore.
I still love the style of music though and I still love Jesus as he loves me :)
No I am not a homophobe....just a homo-lova!
huh?

I don't recall any "white gospel" shows on Broadway, but there have been plenty of "black gospel" shows, some of which have been very successful -- YOUR ARMS TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD, GOSPEL AT COLONUS, DON'T GET GOD STARTED and, the long-running off-Broadway hit MAMA I WANT TO SING.
Thanks Margo for that very informative post...

I remember the Continentals coming to perform at my church years ago. I was in elementary school at the time, I think. (I'm 23, now) They had asked church members to house some of the singers. Two of the girls stayed at our house while they were in town.
I didn't know that the Continentals still exist so I'm glad to hear that!

There was a workshop production at NYMF last year of a show called Angels. Good music in major keys--a bit too much good v. evil in God's world for my personal tastes, but it did get presented. The shows are out there, but like everything else, it's tough to get new work produced without a name attached these days. Also--I think the evangelical aspect of a lot of Christian art might make some producers uncomfortable. Of course not all Christian musicals are trying to convert people, but that would be a concern as a presenter.
I liked how BigFatBlonde, or whoever it was, got all defensive and "Oooh--Christians are bad!" Shut the f up. All he did was ask a question. Whose closed-minded now beyotch!?!
Just because some Christians are homophobes doesn't mean all are. Some Jews and Wiccans are too. (Well, probably not too many Wiccans) And just because some homos like big fat blonde girls, doesn't mean all of them do.
Oh, and Margo- don't forget that Whitney Houston gospel musical "The Devil Be Hittin' Me"
mmmm. memories.
LOL!!!
I LOVE the heated responses I get to a silly little post.
When did I say Christians are bad? jbdc, what voices are you hearing in your head? I'm Catholic myself!
The reason I asked such a foolish question was because antonijan had asked a similarly stupid question when someone simply wanted to know if Carol Channing was touring?
Check it out:

Lets see if jbdc will be applying his "he was only asking a simple question" standard to that? Doubt it.
So...
Just for my perverse amusement I wanted to see if antonijan could take it as well as dish it... guess we know the answer don't we.
The reason I brought up homophobe is because antonijan started calling Channing one.. when the entire question of her being or not being one was settled LONG ago.

WWJD?
The Continentals are basically a Christian Show Choir. And there's already a musical about Show Choir out there. It's actually opening in May out in Southern California. It's called Sequins!
