Tonight was the first show........ I wouldn’t recommend it, unfortunately.........

Some people on ATC seem to like it. What didn't you like about it? Or anyone else thoughts?

I saw the first show, so I have to give them some leniency, but I just found it to be a very rushed and amatuer production. Some voices were amazing, but few and far between. There seemed to be no musical direction whatsoever. One isn’t even listed on the title page in the program. There was no sense of pacing, and the whole thing was a huge misfire for me.
I’m still glad I saw it because it’s rarely ever done, I just wish it was under different circumstances.

I saw it Friday night....I think the singers and the music are the draw...but it probably helps to have more than a passing familiarity with black preaching and gospel history/genre to appreciate it fully. The separation of Oedipus into six (well 4+1 blind boys and the messenger) is awkward because it makes it difficult to identify with a central character -- but it may be somewhat by design to play into the church sermon structure.
There are very powerful moments in the show, some funny ones, and the best use of lavender shiny fabric I've ever seen.
Finally -- if anything - go to witness the power of voices of people who are in a number of cases in their 70s and 80s....especially Jimmy Carter (not the former President) who at 89 can still do amazing things with his instrument.

I saw the show Friday night, and my rain poncho got another workout! Thankfully it was just a shower.
While it's wonderful to see so many performers in their seventies and eighties on stage, and such a diverse and appreciative audience, I did not get the feeling that I was seeing a professional production. The direction was sluggish, and everything dragged. There was no sense of momentum. I wasn't captivated by the music either. Some of the singing was pretty ragged in spots I thought the band was great, though.
I did bone up on the story of Oedipus so I would be able to follow the story, and I am glad to have seen the show.
My buddy for the evening, who is a theater historian, loved the show! And she knows much more than I do, so make of that what you will!
