Sorry, couldn't resist a cheap shot. I actually wonder whether he's actually got an idea and will be better than expected. Half of me says we will be pleasantly surprised.
Having seen Hodge as Zaza, the thought of Graham Norton horrifies me...and the fact that it's him on the RVP is appalling. But..I do think sometimes, when we've seen shows on Broadway, if you read the cast notes, you often get actors who have been in loads of US TV shows, and this is their first Broadway role, and they're superb (i remember the Music Man eg.) Maybe a little (or a lot of) knowledge can be dangerous...
right it sounds stupid...and it really is, until about 2months ago..i always thought this show was called La Cage aux Follies. pronounced: (La K-age ow Foal-lees)
I saw the magnificent La Cage Aux Folles recently and yes it is a brilliant production and loved the show more than I thought.
Both leading men were fantastic!
But with Graham Norton taking over I have to think objectively, as I want to see this wonderful production again.
firstly I think Graham does not need to do this how as his career is not in harm, I would understand it more if Jonathan Ross wanted to take the lead, as there is a career hitting the proverbial rocks. But I hope Graham is doing the La Cage think for love for the show, which if he is a take my hat off to him and hopes he succeeds.
The demographic of the audience is not your typical West End 'The Sound of Music', this will be welcomed by the audience as he will also bring great humour.
Graham went to drama school, so must be quite talented already and will give his career another dynamic, instead of being pigeon holed as a crass comic.
I hope when he opens as his heart is in the role he will be 'Le Magnifique'.
What a shame. It's a hit! Critically and financially. The producers don't need to stunt cast this.
Not to mention that Douglas Hodge brought the show a winning presence and rave reviews and the thanks he gets is having to bow out so a "name" can have the role he successfully created in this production. So unfortunate.
Um... I think you'll find it's more "Douglas Hodge wanted to move on, so they got a 'name' to replace him", not "they wanted a 'name', so 'encouraged' Douglas Hodge to move on". :P
Graham Norton has just been announced that he will replace Sir Terry Wogan as the presenter of this years Eurovision Song Contest. Norton will present this years contest in Moscow after Wogan hinted last year that he was to give the role up after 35 years. It will be like watching Lloyd Webber and Norton on 'How Do Solve A Problem?' all over again (not that I ever did!) Great vehicle for Norton, now, if only he would leave musical theatre to the musical theatre people. He's even representing 'La Cage' at everything already!
Just got back from this, I thought he did pretty well! The Cagelles were AMAZING again, love them! ALW and Denise Van Houten were there as well, seemed to like it as they were quickly up for the standing ovation =)
I was in Row N, and from there at least the make up and stuff looked fine, from the front it's probably more "in your face" but the again, at the front *everything* is probably more "in your face"
I saw him last thursday and thought he did rather well. He was in tune all the way through and seemed to be really enjoy what he was doing. Compared to Hodge it is a very different performance but it is by no means worse.
Saw Graham last week and thought he did remarkably well. We're not going to see him in a production at The Royal Opera House any day soon but he has a passable singing voice. His comic timing is spot-on and, thankfully, he looks much better on stage than he did in those awful publicity shots (and I had a very close up view from a cabaret table down the front).
As if my evening wasn't terrific enough I spent the interval chatting with Barbara Windsor!
