Question: If Hamilton would not have been nominated, which show do you think would have won the Grammy? An American in Paris, Fun Home, The King and I, or Something Rotten?

I would assume 'Fun Home' would have won due to its Tony win for Best Score and Best Musical...

My gut says An American in Paris. Name recognition is really important for the Grammys.

I could have seen AAIP winning as well for a couple of reasons. First, most people in the music industry are at least somewhat familiar with Gershwin. Also, AAIP won Best Orchestrations so that win could have worked to their advantage come Grammy time.

Don't they have a history of usually being awarded to the best musical or revival? I think TKAI would have been the winner.

It's a pretty widespread opinion that the recent King and I album isn't very good, so no, I don't think King and I would have won.

Are you kidding? Many don't know who Paul McCartney is.

I wasn't aware that it wasn't well received so then you're probably right about AAIP. I haven't seen/heard either and since FH was considered an upset. AAIP makes sense.

I also thought it was a lackluster recording of The King and I. Hell, all the nominees besides Fun Home and Hamilton I thought were pointedly bad nominees (the other three should have been On the Town, The Visit and On the Twentieth Century IMO). Fun Home would have won if not for Hamilton. I'm still not sure why the off-Broadway wasn't nominated last year, is the thing (which I thought was a better recording simply because Alexandra Socha is a better singer than Emily Skeggs).

I bet the creators of Avenue Q assumed that too, until they lost the Grammy to Wicked.

I agree. OTT and OTTC. Were wonderful recordings. So much talent and arrangements captured perfectly. They are the two that I continue to play months later. (Along with the wiz live)
