Grand Hotel, the musical

Is it the same as the film ? Also did the characters of Joan Crawford and Lionel Barrymore fall in love in the musical ? As I recall in the film they didn't fall in love at the end

re: Grand Hotel, the musical

It's closer to the Vicki Baum novel (Tommy Tune infamously HATED the movie and decided to do it upon reading the novel). Umm one character is truend into a ballerina (I can't remember if this was in the book or not...)

I saw the tour way back when I was 10 and don't remember much except how floored I was by it--mainly by the staging and design--it just flows form scene to scene with some amazing and simple illusions. I'm only soso on the score--I don't play the CD much so I suspect to make it a succesful stage show really depends on the staging--as Tune's certainly did

I loved the OBC. There was never much said about John Wylie who played the doctor. I thought he was wonderful.

I saw Grand Hotel on Broadway and the tour. Both were wonderful. The OBC was sublime. Grand Hotel is one of my top 10 musicals of all times! Tommy Tune's staging was beyond brilliant. David Carroll - in his last musical - was haunting.

I love the OBCR of Grand Hotel. I find I don't listen to individual songs that often, but when I listen to the recording in one long chunk it really sucks me in. I think that's why the fluid staging worked so well. A great show that I hope will one day be revived.

Eric, Where did you hear that Tune hated the GRAND HOTEL film?

The story published in Martin Gottfried's book, MORE BROADWAY MUSICALS says that Tune woke up one night and couldn't get back to sleep so turned on the TV and caught the movie. That inspired him to see if the rights would be available to create a musical. It was then that he leared that Wright & Forrest had already done one and were still hoping for a Broadway run. What Tune did not like was their script they were using and he refused to give it out to the cast. The story of the show's creation is covered in a fascinating chapter in Gottfried's book.

But I have never heard that Tune hated the movie.

The show is a really good one. I saw Brent Barrett as the "Count" and he was great - as he is on the CD. The David Carrol cuts were recorded, but he was too ill to do the show so the CD is a combination of Carrol and Barrett.

re: Grand Hotel, the musical

I was too young to remember the show when it first opened. However, one of my colleagues gave me a copy of the cast recording a few years ago and I fell in love. It's such a brilliant score. If there's ever a Broadway revival, I could see Hugh Panaro singing "Love Can't Happen".

I was going to see a production of it at Maine State Music Theatre but my friends wanted me to go with them to Rocky Horror Live. I regret not going - even though Maine State isn't always good, I would have gladly paid 50 dollars to see it!

re: Grand Hotel, the musical

I remember seeing it and thought it was one of Tunes best .

We will never know but I wonder which was better - this or At The Grand. I understand it closed out of town due to Muni not wanting to come to NY with it.

Some songs from At The Grand not in Grand Hotel:

1.See Rome & Live
2.Has Madame Had It
3.Do Not Disturb
4.Crescendo - Cut from the Broadway version

These are on a CD Wright & Forrest's A Bag Of Popcorn & A Dream

Perfectly marvelous im glad someone agrees with me. everytime this show gets brought up i go on tangents about why Hugh Panaro and Leigh ann Larking should be the baron and Flaemmchen. Its a brilliant show with a gorgeous, rather classic score. I hope it comes around again very soon.

re: Grand Hotel, the musical

Leigh Ann Larkin would most certainly make a great Flaemmchen. I can see her stopping the show with "I Want to Go to Hollywood" and "Who Couldn't Dance with You?"
My only reluctance about a revival is that I would really want to see them use the original Tune choreography and I'm afraid a Kathleen Marshall or a Wayne Cilento will decide to mess with it instead.

A revival would have to have Tune's original staging. It was extraordinary!

Ray I can just hear her singing I wanna go to hollywood and it being brilliant. She has expressed intrest in wanting to play that role.

Jejr

The CD is all Barrett. Carroll is only heard on the live bonus track of "Love Can't Happen" at the end. Carroll died before he could do his tracks.

Carroll died at the recording studio. They included his rendition of, Love Can't Happen, from his cabaret performance. Unfortunately, it's not a great recording. Carroll's, Love Can't Happen (stage) was one of the most touching moments I've even experienced on Broadway. I remember sobbing and at that moment knowing I was experiencing something of true magic.

re: Grand Hotel, the musical

I wouldn't say that the characters of Joan Crawford and Lionel Barrymore characters fall in love at the end of the musical version of "Grand Hotel", exactly.

I'd say that they are helping each other out. He want to help someone live the way the Baron helped him live and She is alone and pregnant and needs the help. And She knows that He is dying and will need someone to help him as he grows weaker.

I do adore this show.

I have a demo recording of the songs from "At the Grand" and some of them are really bad. One of them rhymes "foyer" with "Charles Boyer"...

Yeah, I was going to say that live recording wasn't really that good. It makes me sad that I couldn't appreciate it by seeing him live. (Although there is a video of him on YouTube, but the quality is a bit iffy).

I'm glad too! :)

He'd be so perfect for it.

I think those two would work together quite well.

Funny timing on this thread, I just found this recording at a used cd store a few weeks ago for $3.99, and I bought it without really knowing much about the show. I am really enjoying it.

And she was dazzling in the show. Grand Hotel was a truly magnificent evening in the theater.

Probably the best $3.99 investment you have made in a long time. Despite some sloppiness on the CD, the performances win out and the score grows on you with repeated hearings. This is one show that SHOULD have been taped for commercial release as I doubt any subsequent revival will equal Tommy Tune's staging of the original.

re: Grand Hotel, the musical

It's an absolute crime that Tommy Tune hasn't had a project on Broadway since the early nineties. Nine, Whorehouse, My One and Only, Grand Hotel, and Will Rogers Follies were all wonderful evenings in the theatre. Directors/choreographers today simply don't have the extravagant theatrical imagination that Tune has. The last of the greats. He needs to do something!
