That's one of the big ambiguities from the book that tends to carry over into the stage show. According to the book, Grantaire "loved and venerated" Enjolras, and they died holding hands. Hugo also compares them to several historical pairs of homosexual lovers, and their subplot does sound an awful lot like an unrequited love story. But it's not "confirmed" canonically, and it was written in the nineteenth century, so any subtext of the sort would have to be very subtle if it was intentionally written. Onstage, it tends to depend on the actors- for example, Ramin Karimloo and Hadley Fraser in the 25th concert seemed to lean towards this interpretation, as well as the real-life couple, Jason Forbach and Joe Spieldenner, who played the pair on the recent tour.
Hope this helps!

A real life couple played the roles on tour? That's freaking Hot! Thanks bwayrose7! Yeah, Hadley Fraser seemed to think he was gay in the 25th anniversary. Hadley and Ramin would make a hot couple.
If you go back and read George Blagden's tweets, he supports it.
Hmmmm yummy yummy yum.
When this went up, a friend commented something like, "I don't know who's more in love with Enjolras -- Grantaire or George Blagden."

Why did this never even occur to me until now? This is awesome.
There's actually more subtext among the barricade boys than you'd think if you read the book. Aside from Enjolras and Grantaire, there's also Joly and Bossuet, who live together and are explicitly stated to "share" a mistress, Musichetta. Updated On: 12/15/13 at 12:39 PM

Keep in mind that during that period in Europe, and even now, straight men showed affection for each other in ways that were not perceived as "gay." Even now you see straight men in Italy, for instance, walking down the street with their arm around their pal's shoulder. Obviously whether Hugo intended this specific relationship to be gay as opposed to just loving is open to interpretation, but I'm not certain he meant gay.
