"Grease" National Tour

Has anyone heard ANYTHING about the current tour of "Grease" produced by Phoenix Productions? I have some friends who are about to go into the show and i wanted to know what the word on the street was....this is a non-eq tour, btw....

The only thing I know is there is going to be a tour. My theater group tried to get the rights, but couldn't because of the tour. I guess that means it is coming to my area. I'd like info too!

I am in contact with the company who handles the marketing for this national tour. They are finalizing the cast and tour dates right now. When they are final, she is sending them to me. I will have production photos, tour dates, cast bios, etc. on my site, Travelin' Broadway. Keep an eye out. Right now, I am working on The King and I. There will be cast bios, production photos, and tour dates for this show, also.

Non-Equity tours hurt the entire industry. Why would someone go out on a non-Equity production? Any ideas?

I saw a non-Equity tour of Oklahoma - I enjoyed it.

And I saw a non-Equity tour of Joseph/Dreamcoat, and I did not.

It starred Joe Machota...

skempp, i really don't want to get into it, but non-equity actors have to work too. and nobody just wakes up with an equity card. AND, i hesitate to say this, but there are quite a few people in equity that probably shouldn't be....opinion of course...

I personally cannot get to New York very easily. For me to go to see a show, I have to pay for transportation, accomodations, and then the ticket. So, for me, seeing a show is a couple of hundred dollars. However, if a show comes to Boston or Providence, I'll see it there. Its just cheaper. And to tell you the honest truth, I wouldn't even look to see if it's Equity. Everyone has to work, Equity or non-Equity. I'm a big supporter of labor unions, as my father is a member of a union, but everyone has to work. Its just financially possible for me to go to NYC and see shows at will, I have to plan far in advance and start saving. Its just easier to see tours in my area.

Joe was a great Joseph.. the production itself was awful... as was the equity staging it was based on. It's was not bad because of the non-equity aspect.. it was just abad show to begin with. I did love machota as joseph though!

thank you timote...well put. that's one argument i've never heard: Non-equity tours go places that Equity tours would neither consider to be able to play. So non-eq brings theatre to those who can't make it to see the Broadway, which is a good thing, i think.

where I grew up, it was at least an hour to an hour and a half, if not more, drive to catch a major broadway tour... the only shows that came within easy travel distcance were non-equity shows....

Most people have a bad habit that they have to support.....its called eating and when your stomach is growling it doesnt care whether you have a job with an equity show or not.

All the arguments made are valid, but personally, I think you also have to look at the protection that Equity provides performers and stage managers from being grossly underpaid and overworked. I know Equity cards don't grow on trees, but there are lots of opportunities to work and get your card at the same time. Everyone, of course, has a right to work. I just think Equity levels the playing field for all concerned.

Evidently, not a popular opinion on this thread.

I respect your opinion Skemmp, and know what you are saying, but the world of show biz is based on who you know. If you have connections, its easier to get a card, that's no secret. However, if you don't have connections, you have to do what you can to get to the top of your profession. If that means working non-Equity to get noticed, then thats what must be done. I saw a non-Equity tour of Rent, and it was amazing. The talent there was better than what I hear is on Broadway. Just because a show is non-Equity doesn't mean its bad, it just means the actors may not get treated right. Every actor must start somewhere!

way to go timote, you're my rosencavalier!

and though i didn't really want to say this, i DID a lengthy (280 perf.) national tour not too long ago and i felt that we were treated very fairly and well, and i was paid more than some Equity people on special contract tours...i understand the benefits of Equity of course, and who wouldn't want to be a working member of Equity? but as it was pointed out, this biz is almost completely about who you know, and you have to start somewhere, and i don't think that most Equity companies would be thrilled doing a show in FLint Michigan--i wasn't...jk

The connections thing goes for fans, too lol. My friend knows people that work at various places in NY and on Broadway, so his theater group has access to all sorts of Broadway sets and costumes (i.e. if we do Into the Woods next summer, we will be using the costumes from most recent revival). Other theater groups don't have his connections, so therefore our shows are better lol (but, yes, I'm biased on that matter). Most everything in this world is based on who you know... lol. Sucks not knowing anyone, I can tell you that lol

No matter if it is non-Equity or Equity, everyone needs professional experience...it is good for them. Most non-Equity tours are not as bad as people assume they are.
