Greatest Character

Posted: 7/27/04 at 12:56pmThanks, ponine. I think that character developement could've been better in the musical, but Idina did wonders with what she had.

Posted: 7/27/04 at 12:56pmShe's amazing in the book. I love that Maguire was able to take a character that people love to hate, and make her smart, and witty and... *gasp* likeable.

Posted: 7/27/04 at 1:00pmBut the great thing is, she isn't too likeable. She's smart and strong willed, but not to everyone's taste, just like a real person. It takes a long time for Galinda to start liking Elphaba, and that relationship is well developed. Maguire is excellent at character creation. I also liked how he left her a little mysterious, too. It helps you understand how she could've become what she did.

Mrs. Lovett---Sweeney Todd
Although, I'm surprised these haven't been mentioned yet:
Tevye-----Fiddler
Fagin-----Oliver
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Too hard...greatest who and why? Most fun? Meatiest? Greatest story arc? Best known?
Some of the greatest characters are the supporting ones.

have to agree w/ LuvTheEmcee on this one
Emcee in Cabaret is great. (and I am not saying this because adam played the part) Its just has so much depth. "If you could see her" and "I Dont Care Much" are songs that are great examples of that
Hedy LaRue in H2$ - its not the BEST character out there, but it looks like so much fun to play!

Edgar in Bat Boy is such a complex character; he goes through such a wide range of emotions.
Lucille Frank in Parade is a strong-willed person who defends her husband till the end, while managing to discover love in her marriage.
Just two of my favorites.

Posted: 7/27/04 at 11:09pmI LOVE Amneris in Aida...her "The Daughter of Isis has spoken!" scene is great...and I LOVE the very last scene, when Amneris is watching Aida and Radames, making sure that they see each other...it's beautiful...she's a hilarious character, but there's a lot to her.

"In your opinion, who is your favorite character to appear in a musical?"
That's why, LadyGuenevere.

So people can't answer WHY they think so? Are they incapable of backing up an opinion?
Elphaba's absolutely wonderful in the book, but not in the musical. And those are two different things.
And Greatest and favorite are totally different. I went with the title.
