Gregory Hines died of cancer on Saturday in Los Angeles at 57! I can't believe it. I loved this man! He was so talented. Oh My Gosh! He was so young! What do we do?

I had no idea he even had cancer. I'm completely shocked and saddened.
I remember him way back when he appeared with his dad and brother Hines, Hines and Dad.
What a talent. What a huge loss. It is so very sad to hear this and so shocking.
My God! He was so young, I just loved him too. I saw him live here in Austin several years ago. He looked wonderful and vital on "Will & Grace" last season. Well, it is such a shock. He and Maurice are both featured in one of my favorite movies, "The Cotton Club." What a loss for Hollywood and Broadway both!! RIP, Gregory, and thanks for the pleasure you brought to your audiences. I'm glad we have his movies and recordings to remember him with. I'm pulling out "Jelly's Last Jam" right now. Oh my, I am very sad. Goodbye, Gregory!

I'm very sorry to hear this. He used to come to Tampa to give a class/workshop for the local kids every year. I remember seeing it on the news and thinking what a nice thing that was to do.
He will be missed.

I remember him being in Waiting to Exhale. I never knew what his name was 'til today.
A great tragedy . Saw him in Eubie, Jellys Last Jam & Comin Uptown. The latter was a black version of A Christmas Carol by the composers of Purlie. He played Scrooge & I throughly enjoyed him & the show. I guess the critics found it necessary to pan it as it came right after Purlie & I guess they wanted to make sure the new songwriting team did not get too successful. After this & 1 or 2 others they gave up & never composed for Broadway again.
With Mr Hines passing, it shows how trivial all the name calling & nastiness which sometimes surfaces here is meaningless. Life is too short.
Broadway lost a giant talent & his likes will not be seen anytime soon
this is so sad. he was so young and so talented. i had no idea he was even sick. he will be missed greatly.

I sort of realized something was wrong with Hines when Gene Wilder was brought into WILL AND GRACE as Will's boss and Hines suddenly disappeared from the storyline. To learn this was saddening. "May flights of angels sing him to his rest."
Loved him in all his movies and in Will and Grace. Kind of wondered why he did not stay on!!!!! My favorite memory of him was at a Sammy Davis Tribute. It was at the end of Sammy's life and everyone knew he was dying. Gregory Hines came on stage and did a tap dance to Sammy as a tribute and Sammy very weakly got up and did a few steps. When Sammy was done, Gregory knelt down and kissed his tap shoes. That really touched me. Rest in Peace Gregory.....
God...I was standing outside of work today and a newsman from 1010WINS radio came up to my co-workers and I and asked us if we'd heard that Gregory Hines had passed away. We hadn't, and it was a horrible shock for all of us. I mean...none of us even knew that he was ill or for how long. It was just so sudden and so awful. We have truly lost someone who has been a beacon of light on the musical theatre scene. I remember seeing him at the Tony Awards on 2002, looking healthy as can be, his presence filling the entire room as he tapped to Bernadette's rendition of Broadway Baby. *sniff*
Does anyone have any details on what type of cancer Gregory had, and for how long? This was a terrible shock. He was my favorite tap dancer, and I could kick myself now for not seeing him in Jelly's Last Jam in 1992 on my first ever visit to NYC!! Now I will never have the chance to see him perform live, and that is an incredible loss.
A very sad day for Broadway.
an awesome dancer and a great man. histerical on will and grace. i almost met him the last night (august 9th). he had a ticket reserved at the Canon theatre in Beverly Hills to see Lirna Luft in "Songs my Mother Taught Me" and i was greatly disappointed when he didn't arrive. now we know why.
a sad day...rest in peace and thanks for the memories.

An incredible man. ...and we all know right now he is giving a command performance for the "person" upstairs.
I was walking down 42nd Street yesterday (actually, on my way to see the show 42nd Street) and I saw a woman from NY1 News doing a segment, and I heard her mention Gregory's name. I didn't know at that point that he had passed away. She was standing in front of a theatre, so I thought, "Oh good. Gregory Hines is going to be doing a Broadway Show."
This is very sad and unexpected. I had no idea he was even sick. He was much to young to die. They (celebrities) really are dying in a group this summer. It's incredibely heart-sickening.
A lovely & generous man. H would do master clases @ the Randolph Academy here in TO & his fiancee lives her. ( I guess former fiancee now) Well folks this just brings me to my usual comment; Life is too short! If there is something you want to do do it now! You don't know if you'll have tomorrow. Plan for tomorrow but Live for today!
This sounds so much like Anita Morris's death, from what I've read about it. He died so suddenly, and no one really knew that he had cancer. Maybe he's been sick for years and just didn't make it public.
Not necessarily. He could have just gotten it. My Aunt was diagnosed with cancer and died 3 months later.

It was cancer of the liver and it was very quick. He worked almost up until the end and kept it from everyone. He was on his way to the hospital but died first.
Wonderful guy.
