Groban in Piazza?
re: Groban in Piazza?#25
Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:17pmJosh was on two episodes of Ally McBeal back in 2001, I believe. I've seen both episodes and though while his acting wasn't phenomenal, I didn't find it bad, either.

no No NO NO NO! NOTHING happens behind his eyes when he sings - it's like watching a deer caught in the headlights. His voice is simply stunning - but you've got to be able to act, or at the very least EMOTE, to be in a musical.
Actually - I take that back - obviously you don't have to be able to these days - just look at half the people on Broadway right now - American Idol at it's finest. YUCK.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:29pmI can't even watch him in concert. It makes me so uncomfortable because HE looks so uncomfortable up there.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:34pmNot only does Groban have bad Italian habits, but he's a BARITONE...Fabrizio is mos def a tenor role. I think he would have trouble hitting some of those notes...if it were a baritone role, he would be much better for the role.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 3:58pmJust wondering- When everyone says that he looks uncomfortable when singing, are you talking about taped performances that you've seen (ie Late Night Shows like David Letterman and Jay Leno, Award Shows, etc.) or performaces where you've seen him in person? My friends and I are big Josh Groban fans and we've all concluded in our own pathetic minds that he must get nervous or something when he performs on television because it is never as good as it is on his DVDs/ in concerts where he knows that people like him and (for lack of a better way to put it) more "more in his element"

I've seen Groban in concert during his last tou and he was totally relaxed and had wonderful stage presence. With coaching, he would be fine in Piazza. As for his acting on Ally McBeal - that was 4 years ago at the start of his career. He's matured greatly and can be a decent actor. I say this based on what I saw at the Chess benefit concert where a good portion of the book was done along with the songs. He can handle the role.
I do think this is moot however. I think the show will close with Matt in the role.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 4:14pmI don't know why there is so much Groban bashing in this... I hope that someday Josh Groban is on the Broadway stage, but I hope he gets there the right way... not through his "celebrity"

Matt just emailed me to tell me that he isn't sure if he isn't sure how long he is going to be in the show till... and says "only time will tell!"
so there you have it, but I really hope that he ends or at least does the last day of Piazza, I already bought my ticket!

Groban can sing to a B flat. He does so in 'You Raise Me Up' and (I think) in 'Remember Me' from the Troy soundtrack.
He looks funny when he sings, though.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 4:56pmDavid B. should and I think probably will replace Matthew Morrison. If Josh Groban can't pronounce Italian like a native, the role definitely should not go to him. Singing an aria is not the same as playing an Italian in a musical like Piazza. End of discussion. (Probably not.) :)

Well ... I read an interview with Matthew and he was like, "I'm Scottish and Irish(or something). I am not Italian at ALL. So I needed help."
Josh has such an AMAZING voice. I think he'd do good, if he was coached and whatnot.
But I love Matthew. He's amazing.<3

Posted: 7/5/05 at 5:59pmIt's true that Josh Groban is a baritone, however, he's a very HIGH Baritone...Like someone had previously said, he reaches high notes in several of his songs.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 6:01pmMatt is amazing, but let's face it, he doesn't do the Italian thing like a native either. He is no Meryl Streep in this department.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 6:10pmWe talked about this on the board a while ago... but Matt was pretty reluctant to be a part of Piazza, becuase he was nervous to be a character who speaks Italian throughout the show and English with an accent.

Isn't Fabrizio supposed to be attractive, romantic and charming?

Josh Groban has zero sex appeal.
He is perfect for a 12 year old girl, but for the rest of us, we need a lot more 'oomph!', if you get my drift.
